I use a card/chip reader, remove the card/chip from the camera and insert it into the reader that is attached to the computer by a USB cord.

Don't have a card reader? Some laptops have card readers already installed. Some notebooks have them as well, but if you have none, there is a solution with most digital cameras. A USB cable came with the camera in which you can plug into your camera to the computer. This is the simplest means to transfer or copy from a memory card in which is still installed in your camera.
And for reference, after being installed in your computer; those photos can be transfered to any device in which has bluetooth including your smartphone. Enjoy!

Although my computer can see the files on the CF card in the D810. it cannot copy or transfer them to itself.
It can only see them.
It has no problem seeing and transferring images on SD card.

Is same format on the files on the SD card as on the CF card. If you have jpeg files on the SD card and RAW on the CF card that may explain why you can only see the files on the SD card. In that case you need to update your software, get the codec for it to make it possible to read the RAW files on the CF card.

Are you downloading the files and looking at them in some Microsoft software or are you using some specific photo editing software like Lightroom? or Photoshop? or something else? This also matters to figure out the problem.

I'm using only the nikon software, tranfer and viewnx2.
jpg or tiff the files are written too camera and can be viewed in the camera by my computer but cannot be copied/downloaded

If the camera has both CF and SD cards with images on them in the camera at the same time then the camera will show both folders, my computer will show both folders/images using the directory but only show/down load what is on SDcard using transfer.

I see on the Nikon website that XP is not on the list of OS needed for ViewNX2 and Nikon D800 is not on the list of cameras supported by Nikon Transfer, plus newer versions of Nikon Transfer do not run on WinXP. So it looks like you are using outdated software. Looks like time for upgrading the pc.

you hit the nail on the head.
now, since i use xp, how do i get it to work with the cf card instead of only the sd card.?
I suppose i could get a cheap portable with a later operating system and just use it for downloading if i could be sure what was downloaded could then be read by xp.

Compared to Windows 7, XP is a crappy operating system. A new or refurbished computer is a heck of a lot cheaper than your Nikon camera, but if you stubbornly insist on continuing to use your obsolete computer, then you will not be able to download the pictures you take on the CF card.

My problem has nothing to do with the quality of my Operating system. There are all kinds of codecs for reading 810 files i just need one for converting/downloading them.
I've seen dozens of threads on the forum from people with late model computers complaining 810 files can't be imported for a variety of reasons.

Lightroom 5.7 will import your files.

No, Lightroom 5.7 will not import his files, as it does not run on XPpro.

Exactly. That's why I said to get rid of XP. Why are you insisting on holding on to an operating system which is unsafe since it is no longer supported with upgrades and is inferior in stability and ease of use to Windows 7?
