I've been very pleased with using BBF on my D5200 for some time now, but couldn't figure out why it would refuse to work occasionally. Didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Feel free to laugh, I'm laughing at myself and hope this helps someone else. I could take continuous action shots with no problem, but when it came to single shots, the autofocus would not seem to work anymore. It was because I had the automatic image review turned on and while the camera was in the mode to display the last image, it was no longer a camera. I don't chimp at my pictures that much anyway, just here and there to make sure I haven't made a bonehead mistake like not checking if VR is on or off or if focus got set to manual on my lens somehow. The problem was solved when I turned off the automatic review. Of course, I can still look at the last image right away with the push of a button, but my camera is now always a camera. Sweet!

As "they" say, you learn something new every day. At least that's the way it is for me.

I think maybe you just taught me something....When taking photos at my grandkids basketball games and I shoot in continuous mode then it shows me the last photo taken and I loose some time before I can start shooting again. I will turn the viewing off next time and see what happens!
thanks

That will definitely speed things up, and as fast a card as you can afford helps too, so there isn't as great a delay writing to the card. Unfortunately, we are sometimes limited in continuous mode due to buffer size.

in AF-S the D810 does not have that problem.
The review is terminated and focus is performed when the BBF button is pressed,

I've had the review on my D3300 off for as long as I knew I could turn it off. To save battery power.

And anybody who claims to know every function, on every menu, is....
...well, they simply have W-A-Y too much time on their hands. ;)

Mr. PC, welcome to the Human Race. 8-)

Thank you Sonny! Not sure I want to be part of the human race. As for you welcoming me, seems like you and I combined have seen too many Zappa concerts for that to be plausible... And, as for knowing every setting, I probably won't have completed that on this camera before I upgrade, otherwise it would take some of the fun out of a GAS attack.

Never noticed this on my Canon... is it Nikon specific?

Maybe. It's called Image Review and can be turned on or off. If it's on, the camera automatically displays each picture on the LCD as it's shot, whether you use the viewfinder or are in Live View. It's definitely staying off now that I figured it out.

I have noticed that mine does not lock and I am WAY past image review time. Have not figured it out yet. When it happens I tend to get creative. But I would still like to find out why it does not lock the focus. I don't know EVEmenu command and don't have much time on my hands. <sigh/>

have you removed focus from your shutter button, shoot in AF-C?

Thanks for posting this. I seldom use the Review feature and usually have it turned off. It's more trouble than it's worth.

Wouldn't the BBF override the AF-C?

I looked, I did not remove the focus from the Shutter Release and I just looked in the manual

".....

Lock focus.
AF-C focus mode (091): With the
shutter-release button pressed
halfway (q), press the AAE-L/
AF-L button (w) to lock both
focus and exposure (an AE-L
icon will be displayed in the
viewfinder). Focus will remain
locked while the AAE-L/AF-L
button is pressed, even if you
later remove your finger from
the shutter-release button.
AF-S focus mode: Focus locks
automatically when the in-focus indicator appears, and
remain locked until you remove your finger from the shutterrelease
button. Focus can also be locked by pressing the AAEL/
AF-L button (see above).

......................."
