17-55mm F2.8 is a great one.... among others.

85mm or 100mm, get the L series if you can afford it. in some cases the 50 may put the camera close enough to the subject that he or she may feel uncomfortable. But the 50s are very nice lenses too.

You could take great portraits with a number of different Canon lenses. I have done good ones even without my studio lights with the following:

50mm F1.2
85mm F1.2
24-70mm F2.8
28-300mm F3.5-5.6 IS

All are L lenses. With the camera properly set all will do a great job of keeping the subject sharp and the background pleasingly blurred

24-105 mm F/4 L IS
70-200 mm F/2.8 L IS II

Most of the studio photograpers use 85mm f1.2, either from Canon or Sigma as whatever you can afford.

I believe that the best Sigma 85mm lens is only F1.4, not F1.2.
