Planning a trip to Costa Rica, knowing we are heading to the Rain Forrest several times, is it worth investing in a rain sleave? or just putting the camera away if it starts to rain.

It most likely rain everyday, as it does in most tropical areas.

Just think of what you may miss if you put the camera away.

Rain sleeves are not expensive, they are, in my opinion, a bit awkward.

Go for it!

Chances are there won't be much to photograph in the rain...
I agree ...They are awkward.

I would definitely bring a rain sleeve.

If you don't want to spend the money, clean plastic bags and tape will do.

Never travel to the tropics without one, or two! They are a good idea no matter what as they are very cheap! $5 could potentially save you $5000 depending on your gear. They won't help with 100% humidity though, so a weather-sealed body and lens is still HIGHLY recommended.

Even though it may not be actively raining, things will likely be dripping for a long time after a rainfall. And life in the rain forest doesn't quit even when it is raining. There will be lots of unusual (at least to us) things to photograph.

Lucky you! Going to Costa Rica. We were there five years ago and Can't Wait to go back!!
It rains ...and it rains FAST. It might be really nice and then it's pouring. You might not have time to put the camera away....or, as was said earlier...you might miss a good shot if you have your camera put away.
Unfortunately, I only had a P&S when we went.
What area are you going to?

I advise caution on the East coast, American tourists are targeted there regularly. The West coast is very tourist friendly though.

Fortuna is a nice little town with Tabacon right up the road. They are neat Arenal Volcano.
Just a word of caution, though....While most of Costa Rica is very friendly, San Jose' has some crime. We were warned by my friend who lives there and is a Tico (Native Costa Rican) to NOT take pictures while we were driving in San Jose....thieves will run up to the car and steal the camera...or your watch.
Fly into and out of San Jose' but try not to spend much time there.
Sounds like an incredible trip and I'm jealous!
Have fun!!!

Hi molsonice: Congrats... I'd love to visit Costa Rica.. Have a great time. Yes I would recommend investing in a rain sleeve. Most people aren't aware that Washington state also has a rain forest. The west side of the Olympic peninsula along the coast is a rainforest, the area gets an average of 12 feet of rain a year. Klaloch on the coast is one of my favorite camping areas. The first time I took pictures there with my Canon 5D Mk II I had to use an umbrella to protect my equipment. Unfortunately the wind came up and the umbrella broke I had to tuck the camera inside my coat. THe next time I was there It was beautiful and sunny. I didn't need the sleeves but they were sure handy to have if I had needed them. Better to be prepared and not need them and have them than to need them and not have them.

A rain sleeve will let you continue to photograph in the rain. As someone else said, they are awkward. As someone else said, rain can come on very quickly, and your rainsleeve will be packed away - safe and dry.

Why not buy a waterproof P&S for a potentially wet situation? Later, you can take it snorkeling.

This sounds like a great trip. Wish I was going.

I've never been to Costa Rica, but I've been to the El Yunqui rain forest in Puerto Rico. The rains start and stop, when they start they come on fast and strong. There's really not enough time to put camera away.

I was in Costa Rica a year and a half ago. A lot of the roads were washed out from the rain. Beautiful country though.
The temperate rainforest on the west side of the Olympic Mountains in Wa. St is very pretty. I prefer to hike the sub-alpine trails rather than the lowland forest. The last time was with my son. We hiked 52 miles four years ago along the ridgetops.
