I have a Tamron 150mm-600mm in perfect condition. It was purchased at the end of October 2014. Works perfectly and is ideal for birding and wildlife photography. (You can view some other photos at my Flickr site - URL can be found on all of my UHH postings.) UV filter and aftermarket pouch included. Looking for $950 but will talk.
I am looking for a used Canon 400mm f5.6 L in excellent condition only.
For me at my age the Tamron is too cumbersome and I am having difficulty without using a tripod.
Have you tried using a monopod? I've found that it helps a lot. It's not as complicated to deal with or as intrusive as a tripod and it supports the weight while you concentrate on othe things.
I have a Canon 7D for trade if interested.

Actually I haven't tried a monopod so that is a good thought. I'll give that a try. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks but it is the 400mm that I really need.

I use a gimbal mount with a sturdy monopod and it works slick.

Geegee - thanks for your thoughts. What monopod do you use?

I got the Sirui P-424 CF monopod and Sirui L-10 monopod head for Christmas. It is a VERY sturdy monopod and a nice simple tilting head.
Not the most compact though.

I use a Slik Propod 600. The gimbal head makes it a joy to use. Leave the vibration reduction ON.
For birds around a feeder or around a nest or working in a blind - a tripod is OK - otherwise you need to be mobile and quick - and that is where a monopod or bodypod comes in.
I use a Manfro 685b monopod with a #222 grip action ballhead and a #234rc on top and works quite well for me. I also have a monopod with a video pan/tilt head that also works quite well for tracking motion. For birds in flight I prefer using a bodypod.
In all cases, I have my camera bodies set up for full facial stabilisation. Even if you get the 400 prime, you can get by with less support - even hand hold - but you will still need stabilisation - and that is where the facial support comes in. Do a UHH search for "facial stabilisation", and "bodypod" ....

Yep...I've found that the VC works well on a monopod...not on a tripod though.
If it was a sony mount I might be interested--but sorry cannon won't work!

I just ordered a gimbal head for a Manfrotto monopod that I have. I also have a very sturdy Manfrotto tripod so I will give both a try. Again, thanks for your suggestions.
How much are you asking for the lens? I've been looking for a super telephoto lens for elk photos.

I paid $1069 for the lens at the end of October, 2014. Included with the lens would be a UV filter and an aftermarket soft case. The lens is in near new condition - no flaws or signs of wear. I would hope to get $1000 for it.
