I'm new here so if I do something wrong please tell me and I'll try to do it write the next time. Here's my question. I have a Nikon D50. The memory disk will only take a 1gig disk card. Does anybody know if there is away to make it so I can put a larger card in the camera?
I realize the manual only lists memory up to 1GB but have you tried larger memory card in the camera?
When the manual was written memory above 1GB were not very common but now I'm pretty sure it will take 2GB or 4GB cards.
I've got a D70 and the manual only shows approved memory up to 1GB and I use 2GB and 4GB in it all the time.
Your camera may have had a firm ware update also allowing it to better utilize the memory, better check Nikon website for update.
I had a D50 and put a 4GB card in it once. The camera locked up and would not even turn off. I had to remove the battery for 1/2 hour to get it to reset. Stuck with 1GB cards after that, never tried a 2GB at all.

OK since you asked. "I'll try to do it write the next time" Write should have been spelled right. Don't think that's going to help with your camera question but you're the one who asked the question. Sorry about that. I tend to have a warped sense of humor. I don't think the larger memory cards would make any difference. Larger is a better value although if you download the images on a regular basis and reformat the card I doubt you need much more than an 8 gig. Unless you shoot raw. With my Canon set at high quality I can get several hundred images on a 4 gig.
Earlier cameras were limited in the capacity of the card they can accomodate. As noted above if you put in a bigger one it most likely won't work.

my d-100 which is older then the d-50 has a 2 gig cf card in it no problem. the camera is so old the manual talks about cards in megebytes. you should be able to put a 2 gig in your camera no problem. just buy extra 2 gigs so you have enough memory.
Since you can use a 1 gig it will probably also take a 2 gig card but after that you get into high capacity cards which at least on older card readers they will read regular cards but nothing that says High Capacity (HC)
