I was a guest at this wedding. There were two official photogs. One was getting shots as the Bride & Dad came down the isle. The other one was on the other side of the seats. Should have been next to me to get this shot but, it didn't happen.
This outdoor wedding was almost a disaster. Heavy rains all around. The ground here was wet and slightly sprinkling. Wedding was running late. Wiped the chairs off a couple of times.
Everyone out here had mud caked on their shoes (it was bad..). When the ceremony was over, everyone was scraping mud off on whatever they could find. What a mess!

Very nice photos Pat, especially Bride with dad. Just like in real estate sometimes it's location, location, location.

On a side note, looking at the wall with the door open, it looks like the door opens to the back of the wall. Was that wall put there just so they had something to walk through? Cute idea if it was.

Thank you!!
Yes, just a short wall with two doors to open and then walk thru.

They say that rain on your wedding day is good luck. :-)

We had a tornado on my wedding day, and we're still married, and even still like each other HA! Must have been the weather.

Those are very nice images Pat. I know you say you don't want to be a wedding photographer, but you sure could make a few bucks as a second shooter. (from some of your images, I'd say you could hold your own compared to some I've seen in my city)

You are very kind! So far, I've only posted the ones I really like. I might post some bad ones, someday (just reference and conversation...).

Trust me, even the super high dollar pros, have more than their fair share of stinkers. The difference from them and the masses, is that they know the difference between the money shots, and the duds.

Actually, it is a pretty good idea, and a good teaching tool to show not only the perfect ones, but the bad ones, to explain what went wrong.

I'm going to take a crack at critiquing and will try to set an example of how to do it ....... IMO

The photos are overall pretty good though I like the one of the girls a bit better. Personally I'm a stickler about having things 'grow' out of the bodies of brides. The picture of the bride and father isn't to bad as the treed area behind is fairly well in contrast to the lighter subjects. But maybe it's just me and when I see a tree 'growing' from the head of a bride I always tell myself if I could of composed better to not have that happen. The trees could of been part of the picture, off to the side as is done in the picture of the girls. The background of the girls is my preference but again to each their own. The cropping on the girls picture could of eliminated a bit more of the trees. Overall pretty nice pictures.

OK, we tackled the composition ..... now the numbers, and remember it's all about learning and frankly I'm only a few steps ahead of you and learning more every week.

When I look at the data I noticed you shot aperture priority. I have found that Canon DSLR's love f/8 .... I think it must be part of the generic programing set by the manufacture. I love the numbers of the triangle (I was a math major) as it really defines how the camera is going to shoot the picture. Your shutter set by the camera's program was 1/80 ..... IMO a bit slow for a moving subject at close range. I can see a bit of shadowing when I zoom in close which was due to the 1/80 setting. Bottom line; your picture, though not bad, could of been a bit more in focus with a bit high shutter speed. To maintain the ISO at 800, which is a safe number for a 7D, I would of moved back further, used a lens that would allow me to zoom in a bit but would allow for a lower fstop like 5.6. This would still maintain the DOF to keep things in focus, blurr out the background a bit more but most importantly allowed for a 1/160 shutter speed. Remember in the future when in AV mode that the camera likes to hover around f/8. Remind yourself is that needed or can I find a way to go shallower and thus free up the triangle numbers in other areas.

It's interesting ....... what I thought was good in my own photos just a year ago I would toss out now. Our objectivity changes as we get better. I'm probably harder on myself than others.

Overall a good job, just a tweak here and there 8-)

Well done, as you explained your thoughts!
I don't remember why I was using aperture priority...
It was over a year ago. Probably, that's what I used the last time I used the camera...

Beercat, you are a wonderful addition to the Wedding Forum. I like your way of explaining things, and since I've been away on vacation, I am just getting back to see what I've missed. Just wanted to let you know that you have some really great technique, and some very nice and new ideas that a lot of us appreciate.

Maybe, but I've read your replies, and have seen some of your photos, so I stand by my statement that you are a great addition to our little section of UHH. :-)

I was going to put a picture I took. But people jump all over you when you do that. I did a wedding last December and the coordinator and I had a discussion and she asked me if coming from the Gulf side as opposed to the hotel side into the wedding would be better. I asked to turn towards the hotel and then the ocean and tell me which background she thought was better, I had already decided. She said, OMG, the Ocean. We went and talked to the Bride and Dad ONLY. Nobody else knew, People were watching me and I had to fake looking at the hotel entrance. I got the signal and swung around and got the bride and dad coming down the walkway, palm trees and Ocean in the back. Everybody was laughing that they were 'faked out'. Was a good moment.
