I have had one for several years, 10 thousand shots and still going strong, a thousand or so on my flickr site, link below & a bunch on the hog. A great camera thinking of upgrading to the D750.

There is nothing wrong with a D700. Great camera, one I love and will continue to use for quite some time in the future. I have stayed away from the d6oo/610's because it wouldn't be that much of an upgrade for me to do it if it even would be an upgrade at all. The D700 is very much like using a D3 but lighter. You should be able to get one used for about $1000 - !!00 in good shape. If I upgraded it would probably be to a D800 or D810.

I use a D700 and 28-300mm lens as my primary camera set up for two years now and still haven't master all the photographic techniques with the different setting.
Patrice and Patrice, learn = Skill Also do not forget the PP (Post Processing) skills too!

Great camera. I've had mine since 2008. Have taken almost 80,000 photos under various conditions. Even in low light you can bump the ISO way up with wide open aperture and photos are clean looking. Two things to be aware of: rubber fittings tend to loosen over time but replacements with self stick adhesive available from Nikon that you can install yourself. Hot shoe has a tendency to loosen after lots of use causing external flash to intermittently fail to flash (I have to send mine back for repair). But I still feel this is the best Nikon "pro-sumer" full frame other than possibly the new Nikon D750.

I have the D700 and the D3 and enjoy them both. With the grip on the 700, it is 7fps and the D3 at 9fps. Both are great camera's and handle low light well. Remember, a top notch lens makes a huge difference.
Have thought about selling the D700, but its nice to have a backup and one that is comp to the D3.
A D700 with under 20K clicks in like new shape, should bring between $1150 and $1300. Good luck! You won't be disappointed.

I have a 700 that I bought to back up my 800. I find myself using the D7000 more than the 700. The 700 is a great camera but lower in pixel count and not as good handling digital noise as the 7000. Also it will only use CF cards when SD is the standard for today's cameras. CF cards are less available except on line and cost more than SD cards. Check into a referb D7100. This will give you a 24mpx camera vs. the 17mpx of the 7000. The cost I would think would be about the same as for a used 700 and the technology and noise handling ability is two generations beyond the 700. The only downside I could imagine would be if you are really into wide angle shooting. Due to the crop factor of the 7000/7100 a 24mm lens will only get you a 36mm wide angle equivalent. On the upside though, if you like shooting birds etc., a 300mm telephoto will give you 450mm of power. You said you can get a 700 at an attractive price but be careful. Used equipment does not come with a warranty and if you buy referb equipment you will have at least a 90 day warranty and often a 1 year warranty.
