Hi All and Merry Christmas or happy, what ever you may celebrate. The day after xmas Im heading to DC for a day or two, then we will be going to North Carolina. we plan on going to Biltmore, and then roaming that area of the state.
I'm interested in shooting waterfalls , or shots from tops of mountains , streams, water or just about anything. If your
in that area, or know that area and can make some recommendations, Id love to hear them. From there we will be heading to Oriental NC ( im a sailor) so anyone with info
on that area would also help. Thanks

When you go to the Biltmore, be sure to take the optional, extra cost tour into the behind the scenes work areas.

There are a number of waterfalls in that area. Google 'best waterfalls north carolina' and you'll find them. A few are quite nice.

You should probably plan to run portions of the Blue Ridge Parkway if you want mountain scenery. Not far from Ashville is a place called Chimney Rock, with an elevator that goes to the top of a cliff - there is a great vista from up there, and views of Lake Lure, where the movie "Dirty Dancing" was filmed. There is a double waters falls at the top of a hiking trail from the top of Chimney Rock.

Brevard is a small town West of Asheville and in that area there are many spectacular waterfalls.

At the coast, see if you can make it to the outer banks, which will offer you opportunities for great sunrises and wild horses ( near Corolla ).

Here are a few pics of water falls and of the Outer Banks

Enjoy your trip. Before we retired and moved down here, we looked at homes in both Albemarle Plantation and Oriental, but decided both were too far from everything. Oriental wasn't quite "the end of the world", but you could see it from there :D . We were there in 'sailing season' but were "sans" boat. There were some interesting shots around Oriental especially out over the waters at sunrise and set.

I used to do a lot of work in Asheville (one of my favorite downtowns in the us). I'm sure others will suggest some photo ops...but here's what you need to know about the food:

Stop by the lobster trap for dinner (and sit at the bar overlooking the kitchen and oyster shucking station) or by doc cheys for lunch while in Asheville. After lunch stroll though the general store just up the block from docs. If you are in the mood for authentic bbq, swing by 12 bones.

If you like beer, and I don't just mean your everyday, run of the mill Budweiser, swing by bruisin' ales to pick up a custom 6 pack. If they don't have it, you probably don't want it.

Enjoy your time in NC.

If you're in the Winston-Salem area for any length of time, check out Reynolda Gardens, the home of R. J. Reynolds and Tanglewood Park west of town. It was also Reynolds property and was originally donated to the city of Winston-Salem for the use of the white people of W-S & Forsyth County in the 50's. If you're traveling I-40, you'll go right through W-S.

If you have preferences/limitations about hiking distance to the waterfalls, please let me know and I can offer some suggestions based on your needs. I've photographed a great many of the falls in WNC as a senior. Also, I've traveled sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway quite a bit. Travel time is something else you might want some tips on--curving mountain roads can be very slow going. I'll follow up with a PM.

Add to your list The Pisgah Fish Farm. Just up the road from the airport. Great food, good old girl waitresses.

Since you'll be in the Asheville area here are a few places near there. Along the Blue Ridge Parkway there are countless photo ops. Don't miss Linville Falls and Grand Father Mountain. To the west of Asheville there are too many scenic places to choose from and limitless number of Waterfalls. A google search will yield you many. South of Asheville there's Lake Lure and Chimney Rock and to the east the Black Mountain area. Mount Mitchell is also not too far off.

Pisgah Forest has a beautiful waterfall and on the south side of Brevard on highway 276 is Conestee falls which is considered a double fall.

My best friend lives in Brevard so I have been there many times and the area is beautiful; you'll love it.

Enjoy the trip!!

Have a very Merry Christmas!!

Lots of great photo opt. within an hour or two of Asheville. Certainly consider going to DuPont Recreational State Forest near Brevard. Travel the Blue Ridge Parkway. Visit the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Go to Roan Mountain and Mt Mitchell.
Got questions, PM me. I live close by in Waynesville.
Have a great trip.

Don't discount the north Georgia area-there's plenty of parks with waterfalls, and they'll be very accessible from the area your staying in.
