Trying to improve my macro technique

here is a pic of me trying a macro technique. to the best of my memory, my setup was ISO 400. 125-sec at f/8, ring flash.

it is only a pinhead, but it is something simple to work with.
Please tell me how to improve it. Is it a Macro? or just a close-up.
If so why is it a close up or why is it a macro.
I have read books, watched youtube. As far as i can tell, this is a macro but the confusion is. A macro should be 1:2, if not it is just a close up.
I believe that a close up could be cropped to 1:1 or larger.
Please tell me / teach me , what is the difference?
I watched on you tube a woman from India show macro techniques with just a Macro setting on the camera.. It looked like a close up.
A video put out by B&H, was good at explaining macro, but, the photos he showed did not fill the frame and ;looked like a close up.
Very confusing, to me any way. I desperately need help.
I have sent a photo with the exif , maybe it can help.
Thank you in advance. Hobbycam

Just getting into Macro myself so I may be off track but, shouldn't the pinhead be in focus?

We all started macro just like this. Your advantage is that you can learn from our mistakes.

First, you need to understand why macro is different than close-up photography, and use the correct nomenclature, so we all know what you are discussing.

First, read Introduction to True Macro-Photography Forum at http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-22447-1.html . This will answer several questions.

I concur, all this reading will "click" when you get out a start to really practice. It took me a minute to understand what "true macro" was, then it was simple, as is a lot of other aspects once you learn them.
