Just got a Gossen Luna Pro light meter (used) from B&H. Forgot that there had been a thread about an adapter to use newer batteries in devices designed to use mercury batteries. Ordered the recommended adapter today. Do any of you Hoggers know of an adapter or can you recommend a battery to use in an old Minolta SRT-101. It takes the same battery as the Luna Pro but, only 1.

Wow, SRT-101 - that was my first SLR decades ago - always loved it.

I use the Wein battery in my Luna Pro and Leicaflexes:

Wein cells work quite well with my SRT-201. Recently I purchased an MR-9 adapter which will save me money in the long run as the Wein cells are a bit pricey.

This article will give you some idea about your different options:

Nice avatar. I'm posting an article about the SR-71 engines in a little while. Look in chit-Chat.

That was a surprise to me when those batteries were no longer available. I had to get an adapter for my Minox, and it never seemed to work right after that. It's strange that they had to go to such lengths just to eliminate mercury.

It was the 1st SLR I ever owned. Found this 1 at a camera store here in Columbus that has a "Flea Market" room for less than $50.00 including a 50mm f/1.4 lens.

Thanks, RWR for the heads up on the Wein batteries.

SRT101 was my first "real" camera also. Bought it in 1970 and loved it.

Bought mine for a mail order outfit in NYC about 1968 or 69 when I was stationed at the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, MD. Sold it in 1972 before I went to Thailand with the Air Force planning to buy a Canon F-1 when I got there. Sorry I ever sold it.

I still have 3 SRT 101's an 50mm f1.4, a 35-105 and a 100-300 all in great condition. Plus 2 700's... When I parked the Minoltas my Nikon affair started... Those were the days!

J58's made by Pratt &Whitney. Like everything in "the sled," ultra high tech for its day. My favorite airplane......

The adapters and Wein cells work but are a bit pricey. The cheapest solution I found was to use #675 zinc air hearing aid batteries which are widely available at most pharmacies, Wal*Mart, etc for under a buck each in multipacks. The #675 zinc air batteries are the same voltage as the old mercury cells so light meter calibration is not an issue.

You did not state which size battery your SRT-101 uses, either the large PX13/PX625 or the smaller PX675. My Konicas take both sizes and I use the #675 battery in both. They fit a bit loose in the 625 battery compartment but I have not had a problem. Should the loose fit bother you a small O-ring fitted to the diameter of the zinc air battery will create a perfect fit (the larger #625 Wein cell is simply a #675 Wein cell with a metal spacer to increase the diameter). Some of my cameras seem to have a slightly deeper battery compartment which sometimes causes a connectivity problem; in those cases I place a small ball of aluminum foil, about the size of a BB, to take up the slack.

Note that if you use the adapters in your camera you should NOT use alkaline cells in the adapter unless the adapter has a voltage regulation circuit built in. Alkaline cells have a steep voltage drop off as they are used which will cause incorrect meter readings over time unless the adapter has a voltage regulation circuit.

Got my SRT-101 in Japan on the way back from Viet Nam in '72. Had the 1.2 55mm lens, with case. Also bought a Tamron 85-205 manual zoom with case, a 2x converter, filters, leather camera bag, and a flash. Paid a whopping $220. Unfortunately, most was stolen, but had the camera with me!
My son has it and takes B&W photos. Still hanging in there. Good to know if the battery goes, it can be replaced.
