You don't mention what you have for glass now, going full frame might require new, expensive lenses. What isn't your D5100 doing?

I went from a D90 to the D7000, and I love it. They seem to be available again. Sometime in the future, there will be a D7100, but I wouldn't put off buying waiting for it. After I got the D7000, I bought two D70's on ebay. I use one as a second camera, and I had the other converted to infrared. The two cameras and the conversion cost less than your D5100. Used cameras can be fine. Remember, your D5100 is a used camera, too.

The D800 is a big step up in price, size, weight - with what benefits to you?

Having had a video production business for about 10-years I believe in the idea that "it takes money to make money."

So, if you're involved in more and more paying jobs then it would make sense to me to buy the best gear you can afford to further your business.

Best of luck with it... Jim

You have to stay with the DX format, or scrape your glass. What do you hope to gain???

The D5100 is fine just really notice when i am doing sports or even when i was doing the weddings a second camera would have been nice not to have to change lenses while working all the time and with sports i also video. I was actually thinking of the D7000 and if it was not for that D800 coming out next month i may have already bought the 7000 . Im not working at this as often as i like spending the $3000 for it is just so hard .but the 7000 is very close to the 5100 better to and i see the 7000 for $610 and its just for to have a second camera on hand but it is DX Im so tossed in the air. have to make my mind up by 3-17-12 before semi pro ball start the other thing is i know all my lenses will work with the 7000

I would look for a remanufactured 5100 or 5000 body. A D90 would also work nicely.

Usually the import camera has a reduced warranty duration, like 90 days.

Also, Nikon can refuse to work on gray market items, just spend a few extra bucks and buy a new or refurbished USA model.....

the D800 has 36 meg.. No one needs it unless you NEED 36 meg.. It will not give you any better looking photo and takes up massive amounts of camera and computer space.. Not to mention how long it would take to email me a 36 meg.. in face Google the king of emailing, only allows a 20 meg file... If I'm not mistaken. Are you looking to upgrade or for a back-up?
