An interview with Eric LS,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
About 10 years- Taking pictures on vacation

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
Mostly self taught, Photography books and a couple of photo tours with professionals

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
Canon 6D Camera, Tamron 70-200 f2.8 lens, Gitzo 4-Section Series 2 Carbon Fiber GT 2542L
Tripod, Acratech GP Ballhead

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I use Adobe Lightroom for post process. This is a single shot, no blending. I cropped the image slightly to pull the ferry in closer and did some minor post process to bring out the existing color.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I learned a great deal from the photo workshop I took from Photographer Art Wolfe and that composition and light, when they are presented like in this shot of the ferry, are often by luck but also by knowing where to be and how to frame the shot. Seattle's water front is busy with ferry traffic and the lifting fog last weekend when I took this shot made the image more unusual.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
The ferry's and fog were changing very fast so used the 70-200 lens to get as close to the ferry as possible. Wish I would have had my 100-400 Canon lens with me.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
When I started many years ago, cameras were not as good as they are today of course but I do wish I had learned more about the equipment available back then.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
Good quality lenses and a good sturdy tripod.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I find I take most of my images with my 17-40 wide angle as I love landscapes. But I walk around town with the 24-105 and like the versatility of the f2.8 70-200

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I typically don't use a flash. I do have a canon flash unit but rarely use it.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I am an architect by profession and love art so would continue with those.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
I was shooting a Tough Mudder event a year or so ago when my son in law was in it and dropped my Canon 7d camera and 100-400 lens into the mud and nearly buried it. I thought- oh well its destroyed so just dunked it under the water and rinsed it off. It was fine and I finished photographing the event. What a great set of equipment.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
http://www.ericschaerphography.com - check out the "place" tab at the upper right of web site to see some of the places I have gone- including Seattle

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
I know this sounds simple but go out and shoot. I take my camera with me when I go on outings. I would never have got this shot of the ferry had I not brought my camera with me that weekend.

An interview with BeaverNewby,

I will not repeat all the previous answers that I had previously posted in order to be brief.

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
The lighting is the key, I learned from the photo magazines of the day and later books, how one's vision also shaped the captured images. I didn't have access to the best equipment back then but always wanted to do nature photography and creative photos, still do.
I have the best equipment I have ever owned now and I know its subpar in a lot of ways?

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
My current camera gear is a Nikon D3300, 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 VRII, and a 55-300mm f4.5-5.6 VRII. The theme being "Public Transportation", my original intentions was to go to the MATA bus barn where there were many buses waiting for service or out of service. I was denied entrance so I tried taking a landscape of the Bus Depot, but I could not get a high enough vantage point to get the shot I wanted.
Earlier I had seen a Green Hybrid Bus go by while I was parking my car. My original thought was I didn't feel like waiting for the bus to come back around.
After being denied entrance to the bus barn, I was leaving to go to another bus depot location, when another Green Hybrid Bus came by.
I immediate chased that bus and happen to pass a bus stop that had two passenger waiting for the bus. I quickly stopped and walked to where the passengers would board the bus. I did get several shots but on arriving back to my parked car. I got back in my car and decided I would not go to the other bus hub, but lo and behold while waiting at the intersection to make a left turn on Vollentine St, another Green Hybrid Bus passed through the intersection.
I got a head of it and got the shot I submitted a block from my home street. I saw a total of 5 buses, three of them being the Green Hybrids, within one hour.
My original intention was to pp and make the background Green. Not being great at Photoshop I submitted and resubmitted three version of the same photo before I was satisfied with the results.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
Only if I have some images that catch my eye and I think I can improve what I was trying to capture. I used Adobe Photoshop 5.0 Limit Edition, straightened and cropped the image slightly.
The picture submitted was three layers. I couldn't get the
effect I wanted without doing this.
I went back and redid the image in one layer and I was even more pleased with the results and I saved a lot of time doing it to boot. I will post it later if I figure out how to do it, on this web site.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
It's great to have a challenge every week to shoot something!

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
A great local, but you can find great images every where.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I don't have it yet, but a fast telephoto. I just acquired a 500mm Mirror lens to photograph birds and other critters in our area.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I am a scientist by nature and trade, continue to research, cherish and enjoy the life that God has given me.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Not yet, I only have a couple of images that I consider worthy of display.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
I am inspired by the wealth of information shared on this website. I visit it everyday to look at the great photos from others and my subscribed topics. I am getting lot of Ideas from the posted pictures and critiques.

Keep sharing!! Thanks for the opportunity to share!!
