Most of the time you have a setting in the camera that will do it. Or you can do it in post when you down load to the program you are using. What camera are you using? And what are you using to PP the pictures? Maybe I can help.

Unanchored...
do me a favor...would you post the original?
Just repost the pics as is but check the box "store originals" so I can see them at higher res..they look good.
used panasonic fz8 they were uploaded from camera via possibly windows(I think?) will repost.
the were the right way when viewed on the laptop

Now that is weird. If you hit the down load they flip the right way.
How did you do that? :-D

They look a little soft, and the white is blown out. 2 is better in focus. White birds are very hard to get sharp and not blown out. Very good start though. Just come down a bit on your exposer and you will nail them. I always take 3 or 4 shots of white birds, all at different levels.

thanks for the advice will try again soon - part of problem is having trouble with manual focus sometimes but am getting better at underexposing the shoots

Are you using a tripod or monpod? It has help me with the longer lenses. And VR has become my best friend!
Erv
Erv is right...#1 is blown out on the upper part of the bird and the focus is a bit soft.
#2 is much sharper and not blown out.
I took both of them into light room and tried to minimize the "blownness" lol...and sharpened them up...#2 came out nice.
I also cropped them a bit...just my personal taste.
You did a good job on such a hard subject! Good going!!
Just remember for next time...underexpose on a very white subject against a very dark background..about 1.5 stops should do it...take a pic...check the histogram to see if it's blinking the warning signal of overexposure and then if it is...turn down the exposure and try again. :)
WOW- you make me look good - love the improvements
