I have a 18-55 kit lens on my d5200 and I'm buying a d610. I'm really torn between buying the 18-35g and the 24-85g. If my thinking/math is correct the 25-85 would get me a tick wider and a tick longer than I have now. I'm having trouble with conversion numbers. Would the 18-35 on a full frame feel like a 13-28 on a d5200?? I know the 18-35g is getting raves, but the initial plunge would be 300 to 400 more. Does anyone have both of these lens? Of course any input here would be welcome. I shoot mainly landscape, and night.
If it were me and this was my first full frame lens purchase I would go with the 24-85 for a general purpose starter lens. I assume you're talking about the present day kit lens with VR?
That said, I love having an ultra wide lens. I just don't use it as often as a standard zoom...

I don't have the 18-35 (27-52.5mm on 5200), but I do have the 24-85 which was actually the "kit" lens that was bundled with the D600 when it was introduced. It is a very sharp lens. There is a deal going on at B&H right now. A $200 discount on the lens with the purchase of the body.

I have the D610 with the 18-35, 24-85 (for sale by the way) and 28-300 (reason why the 24-85 is for sale).
All three are sharp and with the higher ISO, are reasonable in low light. I am happy with all three.
The 610 is capable of FX (full frame) and DX (cropped) format.
In FX format, the FX lens are ranges specified.
In DX format, multiple the FX lens range by 1.5 to get the 35mm equivalent.
The 18-55 on a DX format is equivalent to 27-82.4 so if you are looking for a wider lens, IMHO, you would be better off getting the 18-35.
Since the 610 will handle both, you can use the 18-55 but be aware that in DX format, it drops from 24MP to 10MP.
Hope this helps.
