Hello all,
I am new to this website. I would like some help on choosing a canon wide angle lens for my canon 7D. I'd like to know everyones thoughts on sigma lenses too. I would love to here everyone's thoughts.
Thank you

I am thinking of the "Canon EF 16-35mm 1:2.8L II USM". Does anyone here have this lens? What do you think of it?
Thanks
Welcome to the discussion. The EF-S 10-22mm is a nice lens, but expensive. The EF 17-40 f/4L will not be as wide on the 7D, but also a nice lens and used about the same price as the EF-S 10-22mm. The reviews on the newer EF-S 10-18 IS read like this is the lens to get, both at a lower cost and excellent image quality although not as rugged a build quality overall.
You might check the Ken Rockwell reviews as well, where the 16-35 is 'recommended'

I have used a Sigma 10-20 DC, 4-5.6 for a number of years now and I love it. This one is designed for a cropped sensor so it doesn't work real good on a full frame but great on a cropped sensor.
Thanks for the info. As I should have said in the original message, I'm looking for a wide angle lens that is an L lens and is a fixed 1:2.8. But I will look at your recommendations
Thank you

I have both the 17-40mm (the older of my wide angle lens) and the 16-35mm. Of the two, I like the newer lens better. The EFS-10-18 sounds good, and I'd like to try one sometime, but there is a LOT to be said for L series glass.
Cool. Thank you very much.

Not many, none I can think of, that will give you a true wide angle with your crop sensor. The 17-40 L is nice on my new 6D, comparable to my 10-22 on my 7D body. The 17-40 on my 7D is not what I would call a wide angle, but I like WIDE.

Canon lenses for the APS-C sensor cameras are not rated as "L" lenses. The "L" lenses will work. The 10-22mm wide angle lens has always been regarded to be "L"-quality, though.
Here are some photos with the 10-22:

If you can get it on-line the November 2013 issue 80 of PhotoPlus' "Help Me Buy" article is an analysis of Ultra-Wide lenses. They offer no definitive answer but rather look at the pros and cons of a number different makers lenses.

If you are looking for a 2.8 wide angle L then you have already narrowed it down to one lens: EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L USM. You may want to broaden your search a bit. There are some fine EF-S lenses available for a lot less money. I can't tell you much about Sigma except that my Sig 150-500 is a good lens. Others can advise you far more then I. Here is Canon's current line-up:

Unless you are an event shooter, the 16-35 2.8L II will be overpriced for your needs although with it being a EF mount, it would be perfect if you choose to go full frame later on.
The latest wide angle getting great reviewws for the EFs mount is the 10-18 which is said to be sharp all the way to the corners and very inexpensive.
Here's a link with a review for the 10-18.

I rely on reviews and comparisons. People generally like what they buy, so they're not going to tell you that their equipment is bad. Buying non-Canon can save you a bit of money without a significant loss of quality.
Take a look here.

Got my 10-22 on eBay at considerable savings. Great lens! I know it's a risk but generally I've come out ahead.
