Pat Shays were used in logging and mining RR. If you notice there are no horizontal drive rods on the wheels. There is a drive shaft that forces the wheels down on the tracks to give it more traction. in a regular steam Loco the drive rods make the wheels turn to move the engine forward. this system makes the train move forward but also adds traction so it can pull heavy loads on steep grades. they only went 15 - 20 miles an hour and most were used on Narrow gauge RR. There where 4 types 2 & 3 truck shays , Climax, Heisers and Willamette all had different drive systems to give more traction. Google logging Locos

The drivers are run by a driveshaft on the starboard side of the engine.

its more likely the traction came from having 12 drive wheels instead of 4

Where those trains went into vegan land before they chopped down all those trees were wonderful. Now they no longer log in those areas so many of the trees grew back but not the old Sequras they were hundreds of years old. If you go back now and take the train you will see the most beautiful places ever. Glad you liked them
