I have the Canon with a bunch of L-series lenses, a flash unit and some other bits and bobs, but am considering whether to part-X the Canon for the Sony. The Canon is a great camera, but heavy and I am getting older! The Sony is lighter plus it has (they say) 5 different camera shake refinements, which also helps as you get older. I would have to buy an adaptor in order to use the Canon lenses, I suppose. Or do you think I would do better to sell the Canon camera, lenses and other stuff as a "package", and buy the compatible Sony lenses? What advice do you have, and are there any comparative sites for Canon v Sony, please? Thank you for your thoughts.
It is no contest - The Sony is better for everything EXCEPT long focal length shooting of sports/wildlife. So you may want to keep a good Canon cropframe body and lens for that. The adapter that you use to put Canon lenses on the Sony adds to the weight and bulk -and- slows the AF somewhat - but you may be able to live with that? There are some nice native lenses for the Sony- just not long fast focusing ones - better than Canon!

Thank you. I don't do a lot of long focal length or fast moving wildlife any more, and no sport at all. I don't have any other cropframe (or other!) cameras, but I reckon I am now very unlikely to go on Safari or Formula 1 events. Maybe better to sell everything Canon, which would mean I could afford a couple of good and compatible Sony lenses, which would not degrade the AF capability. Doesn't seem to make sense to buy a new (lighter) camera, then add to the weight with adaptors and slow down its' wonderful AF. Better to go entirely Sony?

Imagemeister, can I please ask you, without causing offence, where do you come from in your opinions re Canon v Sony? I assume (but you should never assume anything) that you are impartial, but it would be helpful to know how you form your opinions. From what experience does your undoubted expertise come from?
I don't know if my pockets are deep enough, but I have several L-series lenses to sell, and hopefully they will be enough to create a deep enough pocket for a lesser number of Zeiss lenses.
I am 45+years in photography, about 3 intensive years on this forum and I shoot both Canon and Sony ......The real money in photography is being able to teach it - so that is what I aspire to .....

P.S. I am even shooting a Nikkor lens on my Sony now .......along with my binoculars .....so I guess you could say I am impartial - I like to use whatever works best.
Jump ship. A7ii will outperform the 5d2. That said make sure it has the lenses you want.

I obviously need to do some research and try a "hands-on" but I just wanted to know whether it was even worth considering. It seems clear that it is. Thank you.

Thank you. I didn't mean to question your integrity, but there are lots of people who are "experts" who know even less than me - and as you see, I don't know a lot! Many thanks for your helpful (and unbiaised!) opinion.
i am looking for some new L lens, let me know thanks

heyjoe, I am still in the very early stages of thinking this through. Also, I am in the UK: I don't think it would make economic sense to ship second-hand lenses to you in the USA as the postage and insurance would add enormously to their cost. If I decide to go ahead, I will let you know, and you can decide then.

Pity you're in Sussex or we could have met up and you could have tried out some Sony gear.
If you were into any sort of "Action" shooting, the choice would be more problematic but seeing as you're not, then I would say the A7II without a doubt even though that's a biased VP. I would encourage you to try out a Sony if possible to get a feel for the EVF, not that there's anything wrong with it but some people do prefer an OVF.
The lens choice with Sony is rather smaller (but growing) than with Canon and the good lenses are quite expensive but well worth while. Good luck with whatever you decide.
