I am entering some of my photos in a 'juried show' at a local non-profit organization. The show has 4 categories you can submit to, and will award 1,2,3 plus honorable mention in each category. They are having the 'opening' reception for $10 a head and all entries are for sale . Each entry must have a price (or you can 'donate' it to the cause)

This is my very first attempt at displaying/entering anything and I sure could use some help! I have everything ready to go, nicely framed, and I was just going to say 'donate' because it would help the organization, and get my name out etc..but also because I don't have a clue what to price these at.

I realize the basics of covering time & material, etc. but I would like to put a reasonable price ..... Not something foolishly low or high . This show is in NJ in a reasonably affluent area. Any thoughts? And thanks in advance.

I would ask someone in your area that has done this show before. It would just be a guess for anyone to give you a dollar amt. unless they know the show and area.

Sure - donate. As to pricing when you decide to go that route check the local market. It is fairly easy, and totally free to look at local stores, markets, and art shows so see what other are priced at and what is actually is being sold. Most shop keepers and photographers will be glad to yak with you.

A good starting point for pricing is "Materials X 5."

I would like to see someone offer ideas for pricing. Cosmo mentioned donating because he didn't know what to charge. When he wants to sell in a similar situation in the future, what should he charge?

Based on my total lack of experience in this area, I will offer an idea. Donate the photos and see what prices the organizers put on them. Also, see what other photographers are charging. Depending on the situation, he might be able to peruse the other photos, check their prices, and then put prices on his.

Jerrryc.... That is exactly what I am going to do. Since there is a reception the night before, I can see what they set the prices at.

Btw, I'm a 'she'. Cosmo is the name of one of my horses.....'I must have been drunk when to buy ANOTHER horse'. LOL

Oh, that's a horse. Many of us put our actual photos on the forum, so I thought it was an ugly guy hiding the uglier side of his face.

A horse walks into a bar. The bartender says, "So, why the long face?"

Three guys walk into a bar.
You would have thought at
least one of them would have seen it.

Cosmo,
I do not know what your photos are printed on but if they are on Archival quality paper, I would not charge less than $200, then add the cost of framing. I have a friend that gets anywhere from $200 the $1000 depending on the size of the photo. All of his photos are on quality papers and perfectly mounted.
