I ordered my Nilon 105mm macro lens from Best Buy because they price matched the competition and offered 18 months interest free finance. I alsoopted forthe 3yr acidental protection plan from Geek Squad.
Has anyone had any experiance with Geek Squad's accidental protection plan?
Been trying to get some specifics about the terms and conditions of the plan from Best Buy customer service but they seem less familiar with the coverage than I am. Trying to find it on thier website is like finding a needle in a hay stack

Personally, I've never been a fan of those policies. I just add my equipment to my homeowners policy. Piece of cake to do, cheap, and covers any issue. Done and easy to understand.

You may want to check the terms of your homeowners policy. Most just cover things like fire and theft, and then only while the item is in your house or your property, such as your car. An actual "all hazards" policy will cover a much broader range of circumstances, such as accidental damage, and can be good any place in the world. Quite inexpensive. I think I pay something like $175 a year for full coverage on all my gear that I have listed. It pays full current repair/replacement cost for literally anything that happens. Policy cost is based on equipment value. Cheap peace of mind, especially when traveling.

If coverage isn't already included in you homeowner's/renter's policy, it can be added under a Valuable Personal Property rider for fairly low cost. That way, as you add/subtract gear, you're still covered as long as you own it not for a limited amount of time.

Yes, that's what I've got. My stuff is covered wherever it is located, whether I'm with it or not, and regardless of where I am in the world. I went that route because of my travel and because I just didn't want to deal with any questions of is it covered here or there or only during the crescent moon in alternating odd months during even years...well, maybe not exactly like that, but you know how wordy those documents can be. And yes, it is cheap.

Don't bother with Best Buy policies, the language is difficult and if you need service, good luck. The wife bought me a Nikon Coolpix and was talked into the warranty. My son dropped my camera, broke it, and mind you I had the accident coverage, they baled, said it was my fault, my cost. Took me a month to get them to honor the policy.

I'm not a big fan of Best Buy and their technical expertise. The details of the policy are hard to find because they come down to two words: not covered.

If you're feeling brave, drop the lens and ask them to repair or replace it.

Most credit cards provide extended coverage when you buy a product using them. Probably not dropping, though, but you never know.

My experiences with the Geek Squad is that I knew more than they did. They installed a new hard drive under warranty and couldn't move data from the old one to the new one. My local computer guru had no problem doing it. They also installed Windows 8 when I asked for Win 7. I purchased Win 7 on line and installed it myself. I don't use Geek Squad services. My equipment is covered by my home owner's policy.

Years ago, I bought an internal hard drive at Best Buy, and a salesman suggested that they install it and set it up. It would take about 30 minutes. Sure. Why not. Well, I had to leave the computer. Thirty minutes turned into a week. They had a "problem." It took them quite a while to diagnose the problem, and they expected me to pay their hourly fee while they did it. After much "discussion," they let me off without paying the diagnosing charge.

Now, of course, I know better. Installing a hard drive is child's play, and Best Buy is Best Avoided.

It's amazing how much some of the "experts" don't know. Even at the major companies, such as Microsoft. When I first started playing with computers about 20 yrs ago I spent a lot of time talking to tech support at the various companies. I quickly learned that the phrase "It's probably the drivers" was actually code for "I have no clue what the problem is". While waiting for a process to finish during one lengthy session the tech told me the story of how, while trying to clean up his mother's hard drive, he had deleted all of her bank records! Oops! About that time I decided to figure out for myself how the darn things work!

I never call tech support anymore. Waste of time. You've seen the English comedy series "The IT Crowd"? Excellent.

Did you get your "all hazards" policy through your Homeowners Insurance Agent, or another source? If another source, could you provide the name?

Talk to your home owners agent. My annual rate with Allstate is .02 per 1.00 insured. :)

If you can't get your money back, what difference is there. You already bought it. Hope that it works well if you need is and hope you never need it.

I wold expect it's better to check it out before you spend $$$ on something
