Hello to all Hedgehogs! Would like to know if, and how you photograph in the rain? I was a situation lately where I was on a photo shoot and it was
raining all day long. I had to tuck my camera under my jacket and pull it out whenever I wanted to take a photo. I did come away with some wonderful photos, but was wondering how everyone else handled photographing in the rain or near the ocean with sand and such. How do you protect your gear and still get the shots you want? Thanks to all for your input. Merry CHRISTmas!  Mike J

At the beach a filter of some kind ( clear glass) is probably the best way to protect the lens from sand. If the camera or lens is not weather resistant it is best to use a clear plastic bag of some kind to protect the rig.

Could depend on cold ( like Puget Sound) vs warm (like Maui) rain. If it is cold I'm wearing Gortex and put the camera on a neck strap then unzip the Gortex, tuck it inside then zip back up until I need it.

I don't like doing that because of the warm muggy atmosphere inside the goretex created by body heat and sweat, causing the lenses and camera to fog up (inside and out).
Taking the camra from cold to warm causes condensation to gather.
If I have to carry for a while I drape a waterproof "gearsack" over the camera and leave it on the tripod.

Cover with a plastic bag; hole for the lens and a rubber band around the lens to hold the bag tight and a lens hood.

Or, a diving case. Plastic bag is much cheaper.

Never had that problem. Maybe because I was layering. Gortex was just a shell with little insulation value. Camera was between she'll and insulation. Temp wasn't much different from being out in the rain. I can certify that just wearing the shell is f*****g cold.

This is where an umbrella reflector has it's second use.
As an umbrella.

B&H, and probably other sources, sell "raincoats" for cameras--a plastic cover with a clear window that will cover your head and your camera (and, perhaps, your shoulders). At the beach, that may not protect you from surf. Sometimes, a little extra care is the only remedy.

I bought these for stockingstuffers for two of my sons, last year. They thought it was a big joke. One of the wives (the one that wants everything where it belongs) stored the package in the camera bag - then didn't think about it again till they were on holidays and experienced a major downpour.
The pictures he took during that rainstorm, with the Rainsleeve on his camera, are some of the best he ever took!

I bought the rainsleeves from the local camerashop, 2 to a package for around $8. They can also be ordered directly from Op-Tech http://optechusa.com/rainsleeve.html

I've used the Optech Rainsleeve with success. My best shots were covering a high school lacrosse game in a downpour. I sat on the ground on the sideline with a beach umbrella set open on the ground. It provided protection from behind me and above and being on the ground, didn't block spectators view from the stands.
