I am new to this forum and consider myself a beginner photographer. The question that I have is I am in the market for a camera that has a viewfinder that is not an SLR camera. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

You will find many folks here who love the Canon SX50. Since the 60 just came out, you might be able to find a great deal.

Just know that electronic viewfinders in non-DSLR's are not as clear and bright as those in the SLRs. The 60 is supposed to have a better viewfinder, but I think $500 is a bit pricey for that kind of camera.

The Canon website has refurbished SX50's for $199, one-year warranty and "like new" :)

Welcome. I agree with Linda that the best deal going right now is for a refurbished SX-50. People have really liked this camera for the past year or two. Even hand held shots of the full moon come out pretty good.

Welcome to the Force...

You have entered an addictive land of truths, myths, fantasies, ghosts, goblins and good old fashioned advice (whether you want it or not)...

Seriously though - the folks here have lots of good advice and a couple of days of experience and are willing share what they can - don't hesitate to ask detailed questions, in fact, the more details, the more accurate the answer ;)

A couple of links to help you navigate the forum and a couple of resources to hopefully answer your questions or guide you in your quest...

Ask away and post away - looking forward to seeing some photos.

You want a mirrorless camera with an electronic viewfinder (EVF). To make an intelligent recommendation, we need to know: What do you plan to use it for? Do you just intend to share pictures with friends or do you want to print large images? How big or small is your budget?

Once you move beyond point-and-shoot cameras and fixed lens cameras, the cost for a system rises very rapidly.

Love my Fuji X cameras.
Fuji X-E1 and X100s, but may be out of your budget.

There is a wide variety of camera types besides SLR's. There are point & shoot (P&S), high end compact, bridge, and mirrorless interchangeable lens compact (ILC or mirrorless for short) cameras. Each has its advantages depending on what you want to use it for and how much you want to spend. So, what do you want to use it for, and how much do you want to spend? Also do you want a pocket size camera?

This seems like the best price for a camera of this quality, thanks for the info.

There are a number of models of non-SLR cameras with viewfinders (sometimes referred to as "EVIL" - Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens") and a number have been mentioned. By and large, they are more compact and lighter than their DSLR counterparts.

However, as with any camera purchase, it is the ergonomics that will make the most difference - that is, you need to go to a store and look through a few different brands and models to see if they appeal to you. You might find one has a viewfinder with a little too much "lag" (since a EVF - Electronic Viewfinder - is basically a tiny TV screen displaying what the sensor behind the lens is seeing, it's not as instantaneous as seeing the actual photons of light coming through the lens and bouncing off mirrors the way an SLR works). You might find one model or even brand feels less natural in your hands, or the controls to be less confusing on one over another. Canon, Fuji, Sony and a few others make some excellent gear, but don't get sucked into a "this is better than that" vortex based on what other people say.

Reading reviews and spec sheets doesn't help much with these things; you really ought to handle the cameras yourself.
