I've been dabbling in 'picture taking' for a few years - usually only on trips and travels.
Lugging around my (D)SLR w/ two lenses is sometimes quite cumbersome and so now I'm thinking about buying the Nikon P500 - it's pretty cheap and still seems to give you the feel of a 'real' camera.
Anybody got an opinion on this plan?
Cheers

The P500 is a very nice point and shoot, large zoom and many D-SLR Features, Remember it has a small image sensor compared to the D-SLR you have been using.

Have the P500 & the P7000. These are my experiences.
The P500 has a better zoom than the P7000.
P7000 has raw and jpeg capacity. P500 only has raw.
P500 fully extended zoom gave me blurry images. However that may have been me trying to hand hold the camera. A spider tri-pod is light wt and could be used to hold it steady.
P500 has wide & telephoto button on the side of the lens. You have 2 places to use this option. This is better for me than having it only on the top of the camera as it is placed on the P7000.
I find the P7000 to be more compact - flat as the lens retracts into the camera body. The P500 has the lens outside of the body making it more bulky to carry in a pocket but not too bad in a belly pack.
Colors in images are fine in both.
