help with Nikon D800

I bought a used one from a camera shop and thought the box contained all that would have come with a new one. The manual is in Spanish (should have noticed that). On the bottom of the camera, there is a connection, just to the right of the battery compartment, which is without a cover. Is there supposed to be a cover? I cant tell from the pictures. Thanks for the help.

I believe that is a connection for the optional battery grip. it is a rubber "boot".

It should have a rubber cover on it. The owner must have removed it and had a vertical grip attached. The vertical grip has a place on it to put the rubber cover, I bet the original owner has it. I would check with the store where you purchased it.

It sounds like the cover for the connection used for the optional grip is missing, and yes, it should have a cover. If I were you, I'd return it and buy one from a reputable Nikon authorized dealer. It could also be a "gray market" model which means Nikon USA will not touch it.

And people say we should support our local camera shops.

If you go to the Nikon site and try to register it, a non-USA model will result in a notice about an invalid serial number. That's how I found out that I had bought a gray market D90.

Thank you for all the information. I did purchase from Nikon authorized dealer and was able to register the camera with Nikon. I called Nikon and was able to order the cover. Thanks for the link Linda. I am sure it will be much more informative than a manual in Spanish. Merry Christmas to all.

This is probably what happened. I put mine into a small storage on the battery grip when I installed the grip. Another place is probably in the original box. You may need to check it.

How does any part of the OP indicate we shouldn't support our local shops?

The manual in English is just about as useful as the Spanish version you have. Do yourself a favor and go buy David Busch's book on the D800/D800E. It will get you much closer to setting up and using your D800 than the OEM instructions will. I like the color photos of all the screens with detail about how to set up each area to your advantage.

Nikon's instruction books are a pain in the caboose. I would buy this book:

David Busch's Nikon D800/D800E Guide to Digital SLR Photography (David Busch's Digital Photography Guides)

I have his books for my Nikon D5300 and Nikon D7000.

Call Adorama and see if you can purchase the little rubber cover. Sometimes they have these parts.

By the way ... great camera!
