Does anyone know in the shooting menu or setup menu can you just take JPEG or do you have to take JPEG & at the same time you get RAW??
The camera is owned by a friend of mine & he says he cannot find where you can just take a shot in JPEG without also getting a RAW image along with the JPEG.
I know RAW is not an image, but that was my best way to describe his situation.
I own several nikons, so i don't have this issue.
Any feedback would be appreciated. Bill

The setting can be found under "quality" on the menu screen. It can be found on page 128 of the camera manual which is available for download as a pdf.

I have an M9 and it will shoot jpeg, raw or both. Why would you only shoot jpeg? I have mine set for b&w in jpeg and color in raw. That way I can see which one I like better and convert the raw file to b&w if I need to pp the image. Seems like the best of both worlds to me. By the way, there is a great Leica forum at dpreview.com. They are a wonderful source for info regarding cameras and lenses.

why would you shoot in black and white? If you shot in Color Raw, it is easy to convert to BW, however it gives you more flexibility in the event you dont. IMHO

OK, just in cast that question was for me....I use Lightroom software so when I import the files, the b&w picture is side by side with the color one. Therefore I can easily determine what looks best and whether it will be a color or b&w photo.

Can you do that with a canon D7?

Royal, the short answer is that yes, you can convert to B&W with one keystroke. BUT the long answer is that your sensor captures only in the three primary colors and then the algorithms in PP convert to B&W using programming and educated interpolations and nearest-neighbor to guess what the photo would be like in B&W. I know guys that use complex procedures in PP to get more true B&W. A photo shot in B&w is truely in black and white without any color. Anytime you make a tweek in PP you are actually degrading the photo. That's why it's better to get it right in-camera in the first place. Royal you are 100% correct. But if one is into B&W converting just won't do.

Sorry, I have a Leica and don't know, but I'm sure someone here will be able to answer that for you.
