just joined; glad to be here! I have a Canon xti and am thinking of upgrading to the T2i. The difference between it and the t3i is not enough for me to consider that much more money. I am wondering if buying an IS long lens is worth the money. I already have a 55-200 but it isn't an IS. My hands are not as steady as they once were and so I'm wondering is IS is worth the money. thanks in advance

Welcome. IS could be. Do you find that what you shoot requires reach without enough light to get the speeds you need? Can you post some examples or at least the settings you generally shoot with?

And, since you posted about a body upgrade, the differences between the xti and t2i are not that significant. Is there something the xti is not doing for you?

A nice lens to consider is the 70-200 with IS. 2.8 if you can handle the weight or 4.0 if weight (or money) is an issue.

I have seen a lot of used lens that look and function no different than new. KEH, Adorama and B&H all have good return policies and good used equipment

If you do a lot of low light shots, yes! If you are having focus problems with your old lenses, Yes! If you use a tripod for your shots, No. IS in low light will get you 2 stops and sometimes more with higher ISO's What kind of pictures do you take?

I have just gotten rid of my Sigma 50-500mm (non OS lens, everybody has different letters for it) and ordered a Sigma 150-500mm OS lens just to get the OS. I like to hand hold this lens and have lost some otherwise good shots while doing so simply because of the lack of OS in the old lens. I was sold on OS when I bought my Nikon 28-300mm VR lens and saw the amazing difference it can make to a long lens. In my opinion its well worth the extra cost.

It's the first lens I've bought that wasn't Nikkor. I'm going to the Florida Keys in a couple of weeks and the migratory birds should be starting their movement north around then. I hope to put it to good use.

Mac, please share the results with us. Migratory birds are very exciting to me and you should see some great ones.

Photographing birds is new to me so I don't know what the quality will be, but I'll be happy to share.

I just bought the 150 500 and will get it Friday and considered the 50 500 glad to read your post about the os and you can hand hold the 150 500 I am up grading from the 70 300 so it's a jump in lens size.
