Nikon F/2.8 70-200mm lens question

Which lens would be the easiest to use handheld for birds in trees. The 70-200MM or the cheaper 4.5 70-300mm. I'm not that steady anymore so have to use burst mode. I know the 200mm is a very good lens but is longer and heavier. Thank you for your help.

There is no comparison in image quality of these to lenses. The 70-200 will blow the other away. It will work better in low light also. You didn't say which models you are looking at. Vr is your friend if you can afford it. If you are looking for a walk around lens that does it all, and does it pretty good. Take a look at the 28-300 F3.5-5.6 G VR. I got this lens last spring. It pretty much stays on the camera for day to day shots.

The one that gives you the widest apeture for the fastest shutter speed.

I agree with Erv, I use the 28-300mm Nikon as the walk-around lens on my D7000, very versatile and wonderful VR

The 28-300mm sounds like a good lens for me and something I could handle. It's smaller and lighter. Is that a much better lens than the VR f4.5-5.6 70-300mm lens I have now? Price is around $1000 more afordable for me. If I can find one. Thank you

That's a good price! Where were you when I was looking MT :-D
But it is worth ever penny I paid. Getting some great pictures with it. Maybe to many. My other lenses need a workout once in a while.
Don't think you can go wrong with this one Bill.

The 70-200 2.8 is incredible. 2.8 throughout gives you ample light (and shutter speed) and great quality. The VR is excellent. I have found that I have it on my camera (D300) the majority of time. Yep, a little pricey, but well worth it.

I have both the 70-200 and the 70-300. I use the 70-300 to shoot dragon flies with my D3 because it is more easily used hand-held. I overcome the smaller apeture by increasing the ISO to 1000

I also have a D5100 and a D90. I'm not sure which one to put it on.

I have used it on my D90, but it really shines on the D7000.
