i would spray it flat black
since i work on cars , i make great sun shades out of axle boots , they are black rubber , you just trim with scissors , and if needed use a plastic tie strap to secure it on lens . the rubber is thick , they will out live you .

The sad fact is, it's gonna break. The little dogs that tighten it onto the lens are plastic and fall off at the worst time.
Sad but true. Last I knew parts were available for mine two years ago, but why would I replace it with the same parts? Ridiculous design!
My thought is to replace those 1mm diameter screws with slightly wider nut and bolt through. 8-)
Or I could get a replacement for $400.

I have replaced only a couple, over many years, on my 400/2.8. Bought the parts directly from Nikon, but I have heard they no longer sell parts. Too bad really, so I hope I never need additional copies!
These would be replacements for a very low volume lens. They are probably built one at time to order in which case $1k is reasonable. It might even be a break even price. I've tracked costs for a CNC and paint operation. Set up cost is the killer. The $1k pays for the time and effort to change the machine configuration, the paperwork, the inventory tracking etc. the physical fabrication cost is likely peanuts. There may also be. "Penalty" built in to the price to discourage ordering unless you really need the item. An additional but hard to measure cost it the possible interruption of another production run of a much larger quantity - say thousands of pieces.
Doesn't matter if you are talking cameras or lawnmower parts-- same issues apply.

You're right on the mark. A very common why of curing that type of problem. Just get longer screws with a nuts, drill both mounting holes completely through the base and then bolt it on. Much more secure that way.

BTW: A fantastic idea if I ever am thinking I need a new one!
I would think that if you pay $18,000.00 for a lens, it would come with a lens hood.
