I was shopping for the Nikon D3300 and this week most stores were selling it for $499, except for Abes of Maine which listed it as $439. How can I tell if it's gray market or not?
Well, you buy it, then you see if you can register it.
If you can't register it with Nikon...
Hey, you got screwed.
And good luck getting any salve for your bum after that.
1. Abe's of Maine - AIN'T. They are in New Joysie... (New Jersey)
Since moving from Maine to Jersey, they became shady.
2. Not everything they sell is grey market. I bought a lens from them. Tamron SP AF 180mm Macro. Saved me about 90+ bucks.
The proof in the pudding was the registering on Tamron's site.
It took, so Tamron was happy it was fer reals. (Not grey)
Now granted, the lens does NOT auto focus on my D3300. I knew it wouldn't when I ordered it. But it works fine with a Nikon that does have the in camera focus drive to steer it.
I bought it with the intention of manually and mechanically focusing it for Macro shots.
So Abe's of New Jersey can be a nightmare, or a God send.
When I decided to get my D3300, I went locally. I went to Sam's Club and got a Lunch Box. Camera, 18-55mm lens, 55-200mm lens, and a Nikon case, and a battery. The 16GB SD card wasn't there. So I went back in and got a 32GB mini SD card. (They didn't have a 64GB)
Once, I ran out of room with it because I put two soccer games back to back on it with a bunch of other bird shots.
After I got home I remembered I had a 64GB mini in my Smarter-than-me-phone, and switched them around.
And I make sure the card is downloaded, formatted in camera, and ready to rock-n-roll again.
So for convenience, you might want to look close to you. Then start appeasing your GAS attacks.
Never deny your GAS attacks. You will find the directions you want to pursue.
But don't start off getting your bung reamed by some shady online dealer.
Deal locally so you can kick butt if anything goes arye.
Or deal with B&H or another one of the sponsors here. ;)
