Canon AF Micro Adjustment

How is the AF Micro Adjustment performed on the Canon 7D? How does one determine if it is getting better or worse? It is not real clear except how to do the actual adjustment but not on which way to go or to verify you are better or worse.

Going in the + direction moves the focus plane further away....from the camera position.

For starts you have to set up a test range so to say. I use "Lens Align" and here's the idea. You focus with AF and max aperture on a target, a yardstick on the 18" mark with the yardstick at about 20 degrees. it helps to place a focus object along side the 18" mark. Take your shot and look on screen to see where the focus is best. If the focus point is behind the focus point of 18" you are back focusing and if it's on the front side, closer to you then it's front focusing.

Thank you, the aluminum yard stick doesn't come with the "LensAlign" kit. I bought it at Home Depot for under $3.00. I do use the yard stick for my long lenses and it works well on the normal (shorter) lenses too . Look up "LensAlign" and check out their distance chart and it explains all you need to know to align the sensor in the camera to your lens. It's easy and fun too and you can see the difference. If you have an AF problem, it's I think the best way to go....Ron

I have a 4' aluminum measuring stick for Architecture that will work just fine. I do not believe I have a problem but have not really tested things out and this will help determine it.

You may not have a problem but once you have done this then you know that the AF is fine and if there are any OOF shots you can rule out the AF. I do like that doubled numbered yard stick because it make's it very easy to check the focus. Look at the number 20" mark on the left and right side, one is front and the other is back. If either is sharper then the other it's very easy so see which direction you need to adjust, and if #18" is off same thing. Both guide books that I bought for the 5D MKII and the 7D said don't mess with micro adjusting your cameras but again it's easy. Have fun and a very Happy Holiday to you and yours however you celebrate it...Ron
