Starting a photography business: While it helps to know what kind of service you are going to offer and being able to deliverer them, is important. I would like for you to take a second and think about the name of your business. In many ways your business name will define how customers look at you. Yes, John Smith (a good friend) Fine Photographs of Dallas, Texas is a good name, but it does not say much about what kind of photos this fellow is best at.
I locked my self in to two very limiting company names. But folks didnt come to me, I hired and them. So the name was not that important. But putting myself out there as a taker of fine pictures is another matter.
Also having the newest black camera with the great long white lens, the jacket and all the right equipment is also going to define you.
But do thing about it, but do your best and folks will come running.

In todays economy I think starting a photography business is going to be a long haul. Be it pro or semi pro. Back in the day it was fairly easy. And yes you still had to be great at what you did. But now days everyone with a big camera thinks they are pros. It is hard to get your name out there and get jobs when so many cut their prices just so they can work. I my mind a pro can make enough money in his craft to support his family. Not an easy thing to do, even with a full time job of other sorts.
I was a second shooter at my wife's sisters daughters wedding out in Oregon.
They set it up so I could help the photographer that they hired. I knew right away he did not have a clue as to what he needed to do to get the shots that would make the family happy. He had to use some of my equipment and asked me a thousand questions on why I was shooting things. Found out after the wedding it was his first shoot. And the pictures he showed the family of his work were not his.
When I started to be a pro, I worked as a second shooter for 2 years. And when I thought I could hand my pictures to someone and be proud, I started my own business.
