I am trying to photograph distant summits and get kind of a close-up view. Can I add a wide-angle lens to a zoom lens.
A 70-300mm with stabilizer?

Any suggestions? thanks.

It just takes a good telephoto lens and the gas and shoe leather to get to a good vantage point on a sunny day. The close-up I posted was with a Sigma AF 400mm F5.6 APO lens, a full frame lens, and it will yield a 600mm equivalent in 35mm terms when used on a Nikon DX sensor body like my D90 used to take that shot. I usually shoot scenics at F8 to F11 depending on the distance.
That close-up shot is NOT cropped in any way and is tha actual view through the lens from 25 miles away.

MT... Don't you just hate getting up in the morning and seeing the same old boring mountains like that? You need to go to Hollywood and get a change of pace.

Beautiful shots MT and beautiful part of our country too.
