"Want to know a professional secret? I always shoot in Matrix metering and Program automatic! I only revert to manual exposure in rare cases where I really need to lock down an exposure in changing light.

"I never use center weighted or spot metering!

"When I need to make something lighter or darker I use the exposure compensation control with my camera in automatic. Every camera has a compensation control or buries it in a menu."

Per: www.kenrockwell.com/tech/exposure.htm

I have changed the website by dropping the http:and slashes to keep this in "Main Photography Discussion"

Rockwell is simply addressing the beginner photographers who are desperately looking for some one to tell them what to buy, and how to set up their camera. Someone to give them confidence and simple answers to the often intimidating complexities of photography.

Funny thing though, there seem to be quite a few advanced photographers who just don't understand who Rockwell is addressing, and they get upset about the over-simplified advice Rockwell is giving readers. Anyway, an advanced photographer should not be all that concerned about which modes others are using or not using.

I like Ken.

He tends to be melodramatic and that's fine with me, he's trying to make a point.

There is a myth that you can't be a seasoned photog and shoot in anything but full manual mode looking like you are shooting for life magazine with a meter hanging around your neck.

My comment would be, use whatever gets you the results you want. If you aren't getting certain results, then switch to what does.

Your philosophy is a version of the same thing I used as a drug/alcohol abuse counselor. I had a plaque on my office wall that said, "If what you are doing in your life is not working.........DO SOMETHING ELSE" ... Simple, but effective. Some people make the same mistakes over and over and wonder why nothing changes (And yes, I DO know the definition of insanity....LOL)

Yeah, right from his "About" Page:

"I have the energy and sense of humor of a three-year old, so remember, this is a personal website, and never presented as fact. I enjoy making things up for fun, as does The Onion, and I publish them here — even on this page."

Try to avoid taking advice of any kind from someone who describes himself as a 3 yr old with a sense of humor. I't will lead to many bad decisions :)

There are so many well established tutorials, books, and internet sourcing for beginning photographers (and advanced too) that Ken Rockwell should be much nearer the bottom of the list than the top.

My professional secret is a flashmeter, a color meter, and a spot meter, and knowing how to use them.

It would be interesting to know how many people carry color temperature meters (and know how to use them), and, no, I don't mean the WB function on their cameras. The museum recently had an exhibit that was color-balanced to 2800 degrees Kelvin. When I saw visitors with anything beyond a P&S or phone, I would mention that fact. The exhibit was displayed for more than a year, and only twice did I have people thank me and reset their CB. Most just looked at me like I was speaking Klingon (except the Klingon who thought I was speaking High Vulcan) and walked (some ran) away.

I used to use Minolta and Spectracolor(?) color temp meters when I shot film, but I find that shooting raw and using a Colorchecker Passport is easier and requires far less upkeep to produce superior results. And if I make a mistake or don't like the profile I create, it's easy enough to adjust and correct - nothing is "baked in" until I produce my working psd file, and then it is only baked into the working file.

I currently use a flash meter - an old Gossen LunaPro SBC - crude but accurate.
