Sounds like a Renault Dauphine a friend of mine had!

50 worst cars of all time:

I learned to drive in the summer of 1964 in my grandfather's 1962 Renault Dauphine. It was a fun little car to drive. A three speed manual transmission and an underpowered 4cyl in the rear meant that VW beetles would beat me in drag races, but I could out handle them on a road race. All in all it was a fairly decent car.

Ha! This is hands-down easy. A Dodge Intrepid, 2.4L piece of you-know-what. I bought it used from a (supposedly) reputable Chevy dealer in 2007 when I was out of work and needed some reliable transportation to get to a job. No warranty, of course and it took the last of my savings at that time.

A foreign Dodge, you ask? The motor and transaxle were Mitsubishi. Sounds foreign to me.

Put a few hundred miles on that piece of junk and the trans broke; left me stranded on the highway on the way to a new job. Repairs were over $2,400 on the credit card.

Got the car back...drove it for some months and boom, trans broke. Of course, the repair warranty had run out by this time. Another $2k on the card. Couldn't afford to buy anything else at the time.

Drove the car for some more months...and guess what? There I was along side the expressway again with a broken trans. This time under warranty from the last repair. The shop put in a new (read that 'different') cluster gear set instead of rebuilding the old one and I felt better about that.

Now, lest you think that I'm hard on cars, I can assure you that I am not and I do keep them serviced. Like having a new exhaust system put on the junker because it was just starting to get a little loud.

I picked up the car and paid the $400 bill to replace the exhaust system, drove the car for 40 miles and gosh, guess what happened? Yep, there I was on the expressway with a broken trans.

I will never again own a Chrysler product. Their slogan, 'Detroit's Import'? They need to export them.

I too had an Intrepid disaster. Bought it new (1994) and luckily spent an extra $700 for an extended bumper to bumper warranty. This car was in the shop roughly every 2 months for something over a 7 year interval. Dodge spent about $40,000 dollars fixing this thing for my $700 warranty. Sold it as soon as the warranty ran out.

Worst car was a 1976 BMW 2002 I bought with only 40,000 miles on it. It had been stored outside for a year, but looked like new, inside and out. Apparently the rings had rusted, because it used a quart of oil every 600 miles. It over heated driving from Lake Tahoe over the pass. Had to leave it in a small mountain town garage and take the bus back to Oakland. Went back and got it, and it broke down again 40 miles from home. Had it towed home. After getting it running again, it blew the hydraulic line in the transmission. Then the brakes faded on a long downhill due to a dragging disc. It finally ran well enough for a dealer to accept as a trade in. I definitely got my money's worth from free towing from AAA.

Ouch. Ours (Z3) was babied by the previous owner (original)... and we take it to the local BMW dealer for servicing (oil change, normal stuff). They treat us as if we bought the car from them (we didn't) - it didn't even come from here (original owner bought it in Dallas).

Mine was a 63 ford station wagon. Bought it new, and before I traded it in a year later, I had put on 3 sets of tires and did 4 brake jobs. Why I just got through with a garage overhauling my brakes and the next day, as I was slowing down for a stop light, one of the wheels locked up. That how dangerous it was.

Worst car? Soooo many. Most notorious: '65 or so Dodge Dart. But - what about "Best" car? Easy: '90 Honda Civic Hatchback. Occassional 50 m/g. In the time that I had it for 11ish years and 205,000 miles, the only thing that wore out and needed replacing (other than tires, once) was/were the front seat covers..of course I faithfully changed the oil every 3000 or so miles. On the 205,000 mile day, it just wouldn't start. nor could local service guy get it to do so without doing without some expensive and invasive work. So I sold it to a friend for $100. '90 Honda Civic Hatchback: well done, good and faithful servant. RIP.

1989 GMC Suburban 4X4. Paint came off in sheets and GMC would not cover it. 350 GM mainstay engine rear main seal leaked after 200 miles and lost use of the truck for 3 days while they fixed it. Had to re seal the front transfer case 3 times, and yes I did use 4 wheel consistantly, It would end up spewing trans fluid all over my 20 ft Sanger jet boat. Recurring problem with essential AC windows, it would just quit. AC would stop and windows would not go down I would be trapped and bake. Finely a local shop foreman suggested I look to the base of the steering column under an inspection plate for a faulty gang plug " the kind you need gorilla fingers to undo once they are plugged together. I was just resting together arcing to make contact. GMC very poor workmanship. I bought this truck new and it was like selling a bad boat I was glad to be rid of that poor excuse of us craftmanship!

Chevy Astro! Engine was so worn after 3 years that I had to constantly check the oil. I think most of the interior plastic had cracked by then and it rattled like my old '50 Chevy pickup with the rusted-out fenders. Then the turn signal caught on fire when driving through downtown Seattle.

That is the same model Jeep I pulled out of the snow up on Ashton Ranch Road leading into the Teetons after attending your seminar in June.

The worst? Hmmm. I'd say the Yugo, the last year before they put the extra ash tray and the rear window defroster.

It turns out the rear window defroster was a real godsend when pushing the car to the mechanics shop on cold Winter days.

I didn't have that, and I froze my knuckles off day after day.

My worst was a 1970 Volvo, breaks every 200 miles, no tires lasted more than 5000 miles, the engine flooded out one day while running 75 on the highway. It had an automatic and the 4 banger did not produce enough torque to make it accelerate out of the way of VW's. Traded that disaster for a 914 which was one of the best I have ever owned. The last time I saw that Volvo it was still setting on the back lot of the dealership with 3 flat tires. I guess they could not get together long enough to get it to an auction. At that time Volvo claimed there cars were so good you only needed a 90 day warrantee. Within a couple years you never saw any of that series on the road.

Two Ford F 250 trucks. '74 4-wheel-drive needed a valve job after 12 months, and new u-joints after 2 years. '78 put in new starters several times a year, half a dozen power steering pumps, and a number of alternators. Rebuilt the carb several times and installed a hand choke so it would start and not dump gas all over everything. Had the tranny rebuilt twice. Spent a lot of time under that truck in the winter slush and ice. Found On Road Dead or Fix Or Repair Daily. Good Ford acronyms.
