Camera Raw Update 8.7 for Canon 7D Mk2 is now available

I may have missed an earlier revelation, but in case it hasn't been reported, I discovered yesterday that the Camera Raw update for Windows v.8.7 is now available from Adobe. Among the additions is support for the Canon 7D Mk2 allowing you to open and adjust Raw files from that camera.

I must also note that the download isn't a piece of cake. I was updating from v. 8.6 in CS6 and found that only the DNG Converter appeared to be available as a download. Confusing since the accompanying info said both Camera Raw 8.7 and DNG 8.7 would download. Reviews by other users on the download page suggested that there was trouble trying to update CS6 with this download. Others said that they had difficulty too and that they had been told by Adobe they would have to uninstall and then reinstall CS6 to get the update to import. I was now fearful of big problems so I went looking for a chat line on the site to get help. I finally found one but it was the wrong one and they ultimately transferred me to the "right" one. The gentleman offering help there took me through a few attempts at downloading and installing the update. Each time I got an error message saying that the server was not available or I had a firewall/antivirus software blocking etc.

Finally the tech suggested downloading Adobe Applications Manager and then downloading the Photoshop CS6 Update from there. After over 2 hours of hassle with this whole process, the download worked and I finally had CR v. 8.7. The DNG program that I had downloaded earlier installed and operated as designed.

The gentleman who helped me on the chat line was patient and courteous, and he was tolerant of a few of my comments of dissatisfaction with this totally screwed up process. It should have taken 5-10 min as earlier update have. Instead I blew a couple of hours and a good bit of frustration before success shined on this old man.

I subject you members to this long story as a warning that you may not find the experience of getting the update you need to work in CR with your Canon 7D Mk2 camera to be a pleasant one. The ugly ordeal, however, did end in my having the necessary update. For what it's worth, I hope others have a better time of it.

Sorry you had trouble. FWIW to others, the update for the cheap Photoshop (Elements 13) and Lightroom 5 was quick, easy and flawless on my laptop.

That's good to hear. I don't know if Murphy was just following me around yesterday, but it was a pain...and, others seem to have had the same pain so I thought I should at least mention it.

My snags with Photoshop Elements was with Topaz. On the Black Friday sale, I bought the complete set. Topaz neglected to say anything about use with PE 13. It seems that the Topaz installer was incapable of working with the new 64 bit installation and operation of PE 13. After I messed up my computer Topaz said they had a new installer with a fix to cover Photoshop Elements 13.

I could not open raw files from my 7 MK II in iPhoto. I had to upgrade to the latest iOS, Yosemite, and then get a further raw upgrade through Google. Canon tech unable to help. After a lot of wait time Apple was able to fix.
If you want to download to DPP, you have to upgrade to DPP 4. The disc that comes with the camera will not work.
A further WARNING; If you do not use the funky "cable protector" attached to the supplied cable and happen to damage the plugs on camera, your warranty is void and the entire board has to be replaced. This from a Canon tech. I use a card reader. Now, if you use a card reader with DPP 4, be aware the process of downloading is a multi step affair. I can't and don't want to remember the steps. I love the camera. The lack of a CD with the proper DPP and the teeny instruction manual is lame. You have to download the entire manual to read it. Real convenient when in the field or traveling, yea, right.

Thanks for your comments. I quit downloading direct from the camera years ago. It never made sense to me when you could remove the memory card easily and insert it into a card reader that was setup to communicate with your computer. I don't know if there is a speed difference, but I never have issues when downloading from the card to the computer when the camera is out of the equation. I also never bothered with the DPP from the disc that accompanied the camera. I only use Photoshop for post so I knew I would need that CR update eventually. In the meantime I just shot in JPG and then opened the JPGs in Camera Raw after saving them. It was an unsatisfactory process for long-term, but adequate for a short while. Now that I have weathered the frustrating download process, I'm a happy camper again...until something else happens.
