To use basically on my D7000, nothing fancy. Shall I go for the Altura I-TTL great price or shall I empty the piggy bank and go for the SB-700? The Altura seems very inexpensive for what it can do(90.00) compared to the nikon for 327.00. Is Altura of questionable build quality? Oh my, what to do?

How are you going to use it, I just use an old SB 24, you can get one used for about $60, in manual mode with a Gary Fong Light Sphere, won't work in TTL mode though.

Plan to use it on my hot shoe. What is TTL mode?

Have a look at the yonguno flash for nikon. Excellent, easy to use, affordable..

With TTL mode on Nikon SLR film cameras, or i-TTL mode on newer Nikon Speedlights with your camera, uses the computer in your camera and the computer in your flash to calculate proper exposure and cut the flash off when that exposure is achieved. The SB-24 I use was for my old F3 and isn't compatible with the new dSLRs.

TTL is where you let the camera do the metering.
Nikon's system works great.
You would be able to use the Nikon flashes off-camera using the pop up flash from your D7000 as a controller ( Nikon calls it "Commander" ) automatically, or manually, but it has to be an SB 600, 700, 800, 900 or 910. There are third party manufacturers like Sigma, Metz, Bolt, Neewer and Yongnou, but I have no experience with them. At minimum, make sure you get a TTL capable flash.
I regularly use several flashes remotely for work.
Sometimes I use TTL, other times manual, but I can control the output from the camera.
You might find a refurbished one or even used.
KEH has a few used SB 600's for sale HERE. It is the predecessor of the SB 700 but still a good budget flash that would work well with the D7000.

There has also been talk of a Meinke SB-910 (I think) poster a while back and you can get one for a little over $100. It's worth checking out.

I have read a bit about that one.
Let me see where I saw the review....

MT has very good thing to say about it and I totally trust his judgement.

It's so funny. I was just going to start a new thread asking about the MEIKE-910. It has TTL and HSS. Probably just not as powerful as a genuine Nikon but for 1/4th the price worth it. I guess...

I believe the comparison in that thread was the Meinke SB-910 and a Nikon SB-500 and the Meinke was more powerful. I may just be blowing smoke here though so you may want to try searching that older thread.

Maybe I should spell it correctly... You can get a new Meike MK-910 at Newegg.com for $104.99 but I checked a thread where another member sold his because it overheated (at a wedding shoot) so if ou need fast and furious this may not be the best choice.

Yah...If I were doing weddings and were getting paid for photography, I'd spring for the Nikon. But for normal amateur use I think the Meike would be fine.

I have recently bought a SB600 and a SB800 on EBay, both for $200 each. They work flawlessly both on camera and off in "slave" mode by using my D610's pop up flash. There are plenty of used and refurb Nikon flashes out there for very reasonable prices so you don't need to buy off brand to get a reliable unit for a good price.
