Posting "what settings"? and such

It might be a good idea to edit into members' signature, your equipment, software and any other information that might be helpful when the question arises; "what settings do I use for . . . ?" and similar. Just a suggestion ;)

Gosh, i just dond't get it! metadata is one thing, but equipment software etc. is another.

I realize it is the thing to do these days, listing everything one owns, but this for me reaks of "who has the most toys", and that doesn't mean they are being used to the best advantage.

Even "the numbers may be mis-leading as that is always based on the lighting conditions. Focal length could be helpful to help people to learn how to use different lens types, but then are we going to aske them to measure the distance they are standing from the subject. All which effects the final image.

If this is what the owners want to do then it is their option of course. My .02 varies.

photocat, this actually was born out of another thread where people ask "what settings?". To be a little familiar with their equipment can be helpful especially since they may receive an answer (say, "set your ISO to 100 and you aperture to f/32) then the original poster says (oh I am using a Koday p&s and have no control over these settings. all I have is sport, portrait, etc...).

I find that this info is provided by many in other forums and helps move responses and understanding in the right (hopefully) direction.

It's not a necessity.

Ok, what you are saying is understandable, however, do people really look at the bottom line to see what people are listing?

If I am trying to help someone, I may or maynot need to know what camera they are using, but looking at the signature is not going to be of assistance, especially when they have listed 3 cameras, 10 lense, a "billion pieces of software etc.

I realize many sites to this, I am just suggesting I don't understand why, probably because i am much too old for the internet :)

No. You have a valid point. You're right, if someone lists 3 cameras then you'd still have to ask what they're shooting with. My original post was going to be that the poster give us this while asking their question, then thought, well, if they have several questions over the days and weeks they're going to have to continuously post their set up. I guess perhaps we deal with them on an individual basis :?:

Granted, it would be nice if people would say....., and some do some don't.

I really don't have a good solution, just wanted to provide a different viewpoint.

I don't know that it would do any good. Mine has been there since day one and folks still ask: "What camera do you use"? People also need to know how to find and read EXIF data. The software is free and available for both a PC & Mac. I've posted it several times but folks still ask "What shutter speed, F-stop, ISO did you use"? Look it up folks, I do.
