The Man and The Birds.

There is someone who needs to read this today.

(Thanks to Paul Harvey.)

The Man and The Birds.

Once there was a good man. A family man and a successful one who was
loved by many and respected by all who knew him. He was a thinking,
practical man whose common-sense had served him well in all aspects of his life.
A good man...but not a religious one. And he rationalized his
non-religion on the fact that religion was based on a premise that he
could not believe...that The Creator had sent His Son to Earth to
bring God's New Law to His earthly children ( this part was
believable), knowing full well how that Son would be treated by the
recipients of that New Law...to be scorned, ridiculed, abused, vilified, then murdered in a particularly horrible way. This part was
unbelievable. The Creator had too many options available to Him in bringing the New Law...He could write it in fire across the sky...He could send a host of Angels to proclaim the New Word...but He would
NOT subject His Son to such treatment...He just wouldn't! It didn't compute! It wasn't practical! So the good man didn't believe this most basic concept.
But he kept his opinions to himself, and never went to church ( he'd feel like a hypocrite if he did ), even though he encouraged church attendance and activity in his family.

The scene was Christmas Eve. The man stood in his driveway and watched
as his family drove away down the street on the way to their church's Christmas Eve services. As he walked back into his house he noticed that the snow was becoming heavier by the minute...it would be a rough night. Back in his living room, he settled into his recliner, a book
and a cup of hot chocolate at hand, and prepared for a quiet evening alone, as the snow continued to come down heavier by the minute.
He had read for only a few minutes when he heard a thump coming from the direction of his picture window. He returned to his book, only to hear yet another thump from the window...then another. Walking over to the window, he saw his room light spilling out onto the blanket of snow, and there, on the snow was a small flock of birds...some
hopping, some flying up to his window, and some sitting very still.
The birds, reasoned the man, had become disoriented in the storm and had been attracted to his light shining through his windows. They'd never survive outside on this night. A shame. They'd soon be frozen.
The practical man reasoned that if they'd been attracted to his light, that they might be attracted to a light from his barn, where they'd find safety and warmth and a chance to survive. Donning his coat, he went to his barn where he threw open the wide doors and turned on the light. But the half-frozen creatures ignored the barn light and continued to flounder around in the snow...and more and more of them were becoming still by the minute.
OK, the practical, reasoning man thought, if that won't work, maybe I can lure them to safety with food. Bringing out a loaf of bread, he dropped a line of breadcrumbs from the half-frozen birds to the safety of the barn. Nothing! They continued to flounder...and freeze.
The practical man then thought, "The only way is to shoo the birds into the barn." Positioning himself behind the birds, he attempted to herd them into the barn...but as he approached them he found that they scattered in all directions, terrified of him. The man thought, "To them I must be a terrifying sight, huge, intimidating, awesome. If I
could only speak their language...I could tell them that safety lies that way and to not be afraid of me. The only way I could help them would be to be one of them."

And as The Truth struck him fully, the good man sank to his
knees...there in the new-fallen snow.
