My wife looked out of the kitchen window and spotted this hungry visitor. I grabbed my SX50 and started shooting. I got a couple of good shots before he/she? flew away.

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS
ISO 200
Aperture 6.5
Shutter speed 1/320
Focal length 1201mm (35mm equivalent)

Thanks Jim, greatly appreciated. And now it is overcast out there again, so I was really lucky to get these shots when the sun was out.

Nice shot of a Red Bellied Woodpecker. Most likely an immature female.

I think your little visitor is a Golden Fronted Woodpecker. Put some suet there and he will probably visit often. Nice shots!

I think the bit of red on the lower belly and red instead of bright yellow at the base of the beak make it a red bellied.

Thought so too at first but I think the gold at the back of the neck under the red cap is what makes me think golden.

We don't have Golden Fronteds here in the North so I don't know them first hand, but in my bird books, the Golden Fronted does not have red on its belly, and this one clearly does.

Both species are around here and I was basing my designation on the golden or sometimes yellow orange splash at the base of the upper mandible, the lack of barring on the tail feathers, the yellow orange on the nape (not the distinctive red) , and the yellow orange on the lower belly and thighs ( the red on the belly on the red bellied is usually a little less likely to see in a shot like this). This being a female is probable in either species because if RB there is not the long red nape and the Golden male would have the obvious red cap.
Just my humble opinion.
