I have been wanting a new camera. I'm still shooting with a Nikon D200 and would like to upgrade.
Been watching the D7100 for a few months and the prices are great right now....BUT, seems Nikon may be announcing a new D7200 in January.
Should I jump on a bargain for the D7100 or hold out and go big with the D7200?
Whatever I buy will have to last me for a long time.
The D7100 is a very fine camera and its at a very attractive price. When the D7200 comes out there is no doubt it will have improvements, as well as a higher price. Your gamble, sure thing or unknown. As Clint Eastwood would say, "Do ya feel lucky, well do ya??"
There's a computer industry saying that applies here - "If you can buy it, it's already obsolete." The point is to weigh the feature set of the currently-available Nikon to the unknown capabilities that you might find in the "maybe it'll be better" but most likely more expensive replacement model. If the current model does what you need it to do, go for it!
Gary, one counter question may be 'What is your skill level with a DSLR'? If you are a relatively new user, the D7100 has enough features to learn and master to potentially occupy your time until the D7300 comes out. If you're more of a seasoned veteran it may be worth your time and money to get the latest technology coming out on the market.
Don't worry about the cost of the D7100 suddenly going up. Once Nikon drops their price on a model they have had out for two years, they are not apt to do anything in the future but reduce that price again. Besides that if and when the D7200/D9300 comes out, a lot of people will be selling off their D7100's and D7000's at even a lower price. The question really is how good of a camera will suit your needs at this time in your life? January or February is not a long time to wait to see what is coming out and thereby having more to chose from.
Thanks everyone, I appreciate the notes.
I'm going to hold out to see what comes out. Will give me time to add to my savings
I would hold out till the 7200 comes out and then buy the 7100 because the price will drop even further.
This depends on your budget and skill level and how much new technology means to you.
Buy a used 7100 now and in a year, or two, buy a used 7200 if the differences are big enough to make you want to do so.
Or you could wait until the 7200 has been replaced once or twice and then it will be real cheap.
If you like and want the Nikon 7200 buy it, unless you are standing at the end of the assembly line at the factory you will never be to beat the latest and greatest camera body or lens quest, and have a deep pockets. Go for it it's Christmas and think about all of the shots you coulda got with that camera
