I am relatively new to photography and need advice. I like to go to car shows and take pictures of the cars. I currently use a Sony p&s or my cell phone. I would like to upgrade to a DSLR or a mirrorless camera. I also like to take landscape and other type pictures also.

Would you recommend a DSLR or a mirrorless camera? Which make and model would you recommend? Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

Either will work. Visit a camera store, try them out, find one that feels good in your hand that fits your budget. Either one will improve your photos immensely over a P & S. I use a Canon T3i and sometimes use the in camera fisheye conversion to give car shots a unique look.

You should do at least some of your own research. Then come back and ask more specific questions.

Mirrorless or DSLR is a personal choice.

With a DSLR you will need a selection of lenses.

With a mirrorless you can have fixed lenses on some models and you can get some with interchangeable lenses.

Google 'mirrorless vs dslr' and you'll get reading material for days!

I like car shows, too. Just get a wide angle lens and definitely a polarizing filter. Make sure the lens is a zoom.. You don't always have the freedom to stand anywhere you'd like to so zoomability is a must.

Finding a spot can be a challenge at times! That is an excellent suggestion! Thanks!

I do like the feel of the Canon cameras that I have picked up. I also am looking at the Sony A series cameras with the interchangeable lens. I need to get the feel for that one also. Thanks for the input!

I have done some research on DSLR vs mirrorless and I like both types. The Sony A series camera have interchangeable lenses and are reasonably priced. I also have been looking at the Canon EOS Rebel series and like those (reasonably priced also).

It is very true that you can read for days about both systems. I will keep reading up and learning more about the various cameras. Thanks for your input!

I hope this will help. I shoot a lot of car shows. I have a canon 60d and use a wide angle lens.I use my tokina 11 to 16 2.8 as there is not a lot of space to shoot. As far as a good camera to shoot with will depend on you. Your budget. What are you trying to accomplish as you shoot car shows. All of todays camera manufactouers have good points and bad. I do not get into debates wich is best or worst. I also found out through trial and error a variable neutral density filter comes in very handy for me, as the lighting can be very harsh and most of the time miday sun. That way I can adjust my filter accordingly. I do shoot car shows here in Virginia for many car clubs. There are a few shots on flickr link if you would like to take a look. I am now saving for the canon 6d or maybe the canon6d ll when it comes out.

I prefer DSLRs because I've used that type of camera going back before digital. You'll probably want something with interchangeable lenses. Deciding how much you want to spend is the first step. Then you have to figure in the price of lenses. You don't want to buy the cheapest lenses you can find.

Almost any DSLR should do what you want. Canon, Nikon, and Sony are (in my opinion), the biggies in that market. Note that a mirrorless is like a DSLR except that what you see in the viewfinder is the image on the sensor, not the image on a mirror. The mirrorless are lighter. Note that the lenses for APS-C cameras will be quite a bit less expensive than the lenses for full-frame cameras, and, unless you make extremely large prints, you'll never notice the difference in the images.

I would ad a circular polarizing filter and a variable neutral density filter.

A mirrorless camera would be my choice.
