GPS Phil, if you are out there, I have a question for you.

Today, a sales rep from XXX called about a Kirk LP-60 Quick-Release Lens Plate for Nikon's AF-S 400mm f2.8E FL ED VR lens and, of course, I had no idea what he was talking about. Then, after further discussion, it had been revealed to me that my wife had ordered the lens for me as well as the lens plate as Christmas gifts. Knowing that XXX has an excellent return policy, I said nothing about the order, but the rep had told me that the lens plate could not be shipped with the lens because it takes about 10 extra days to ship it (the lens plate, that is).

My dilemma is that I was waiting to see if Canon was coming out with a new DSLR early next year and, perhaps, I might want to wait to see what Canon has to offer because it may be in my best interest to exchange the Nikon lens for Canon's equivalent which is their EF 400mm f2.8L IS II USM lens which is about $1,500 less money than is the Nikon lens.

What would you do in this situation ? Would you accept the Nikon lens and then order another D810 body for it or wait for the new Canon DSLR and exchange the Nikon lens for the Canon lens because its cost is only around $10,000.00 compared to the Nikon lens which comes as a cost of $11,600.00 plus or minus a few bucks ?

Of course, if I take the Nikon lens, I would want another D810 body which means that I would then have four D810's which is ok, but waiting on a new Canon offering may be in my best interest ? Of course, you already know that I wouldn't mind having another D810 anyway, because I don't like changing lenses on any camera.

What would you do, Phil ?

Thanks, and best regards !
~Doug~

Why not send Phil a PM direct? That's what I would do if I wanted to contact him. :-)

Why not just cal XXX back and ask them to send the lens attached to a D810. Then you really won't have to worry about dust.

No, actually, I am giving serious thought to waiting so that I may see what Canon has to offer sometime early in the new year, but I do thank you for the suggestion ~ as it is a good one.

Do you shoot with a D810 or do you use another well made DSLR camera ? As you know, most manufactures make excellent cameras today and I'm seriously thinking about going to one of those without a mirror, especially, being that it has now been hinted that Canon is now getting into the mirrorless mix too.

Just today, I had received a email ad which had shown Canon's said to soon be released version of their mirrorless camera (am thinking that the ad had said that Canon will name it their EOS M) and it looks to be something very enticing for a person to have for an addition to even their arsenal of DSLR cameras.. Yet, when it comes to their DSLR cameras, it is rumored that Canon is coming out with a 50 megapixel DSLR model that may have a MSRP of somewhere between the price of their top of the line model camera today and their lesser priced 5D MK III ~ meaning that their new model may come at a cost somewhere around $5K ?

Not long ago, I was adamantly opposed to even thinking about having a mirrorless camera, but the more one gets to thinking about having an electronic view finder vs. an optical view finder, there is something to be said about the advantages that an electronic view finder will have to offer, don't you think ? Am suggesting such advantages as having no mirror compared to a camera with a mirror that can go it's course and cause vibrations when the shutter is activated. Too, for those who are concerned about weight, the mirrorless camera will be much lighter being that there will be no pentaprism nor a mirror which do add weight to any SLR & DSLR cameras.

Oh, before I forget it, Phil probably won't be responding to me upon this venue about the lenses because he had telephoned me earlier to say that if he were to be me, he would wait to see the new DSLR model cameras that Canon will have to offer and if it isn't too very long from now for such to be announced, that I should opt for the Canon lens. It is, however, less expensive than it's peer made by Nikon, but I have always liked the aesthetics of the off white color of many of Canon's L series lens barrels. Those lenses have a very regal look to them and they do very nicely producing excellent images !

Well, it's now time to sign off for the night and I do want to thank you again for your comment as well as I wish for you a good day !

Best Regards,
~Doug~

Come on, guys, get into the Christmas spirit !

Because this is a photography forum, if you were to post something exciting in your life of photography, I would be excited right along with you and I would tell you to go for it ! We are supposed to be happy for one another whenever something good happens to us..

Just the other day, one of our members had posted a message along with photos showing his new motor home which he and his wife will be enjoying while traveling the country and I had immediately responded by telling him just how very happy I was for him. Yet, none of you did ?

Come on, guys ! Get with the spirit ! Laugh, be happy, and be nice to all others because it will make you feel better about yourselves too ! You can do it !

Oh, to have your problem! Don't mix systems; it's hard enough to master one camera system. Take the lens and order the D810 to come with it. Four 810's??? Enjoy them all!

You know Grandpa, you make an excellent point: I find your wife to be gracious and extreemly thoughtful. Please forgive any offense, because none was intended. You've just witnessed my feeble attempt at comic relief. Personally, I think this is a delicious dilemma; I am indeed excited for you, and more than just a wee bit envious.

Since I recently exhausted all of my savings and all of my retirement caring for my mother before she passed, I currently shoot with an older Canon 50D and a modest collection of lenses -- all used, and all refurbished. While I continue to be thrilled with what I've been able to produce, I do find myself, from time to time, fantasizing about bigger sensors, better low light capabilities, greater frame rates, the advantages of no vibrations from a moving mirror assembly, and the lure of a long focal length lenses

Thank you for the reminder that I could be looking at your comments differently . . . and for the nudge in the right direction about the Christmas season.

Merry Christmas to you both.

Warmly,
Joe

You are a camera whore Sir! I do see your thinking and wondered if there is still a sister available. Ugly and unable to cook doesn't matter! How low would others stoop for this lens?
