I'm planning to upgrade from my D90 to a D7100. It comes in various "kit" packages and would like to know which lenses might be better and which to avoid. I now have Nikon 70-300, Tamron 18-270 and Sigma 10-20mm.

Avoid the 18-300s

I have a D7100 with the Tamron 18-270. It's an excellent lens and physically smaller than other similar lenses.

The 18-140 is my favorite of the 18-x group. You already have the 70-300 which is next.

Can you get the dx 35mm prime?

The 35mm DX is well worth the money.

I stay away from superzoom lenses. They usually have a lot of barrel and pincushion distortion. Try to stick with lenses with a conservative zoom range not more than about 5x. The 35mm DX lens recommended before would be great to get. Its large maximum aperture lets you the nice portrait effect with the background out of focus.

I second the 18-140. The 18-55 also works well with the D7100.

Just get the body. You have a nice set of lenses now. If you want one of the kit lenses, both the 18-105 VR and 18-140 VR are very good lenses.

Maybe a prime like the 35 or 50. I would really recommend that you acquire the body only considering the lenses you have. Good luck. You will enjoy the D7100.

Thanks to all for your comments. Since I will probably pas on the D90 and Tamron to my grandaughter, will probably go with the 18-140, and also either the 35 or 50.

If I were you I would only buy the body now and wait until you hand the camera down before buying another lens. Then you will know what you want.
I bought a 7100 in September with the 18-140 and the 70-300 nikon kit lenses. Thoroughly enjoy them both.

IMO for what you are getting vs cost, the 35 is a must have.

Are you meaning the 1.4 or 1.8 Nikon?

My D7000 bag contains a 16-85mm/1:3.5-5.6G (my normal walk-around lens), a 70-300mm/1:4.5-5.6G, and a 12-24mm/1:4G. I seldom use the latter, but I carry it anyway for the occasional ultra-wide shot. If I'm traveling and want a one-lens solution, I carry my old 18-200mm/1:3.5-5.6G or else borrow the 18-140mm/1:3.5-5.6G from my D5000. Of these two, I'm leaning more and more to the 18-140 because the images are just a bit sharper and it doesn't suffer the lens creep problem of the 18-200.
