Thanks for the advice! I generally shoot 50 images a day as a birder. I don't understand the logic of people who shoot burst of 6 or 10 shots of the same thing. I am a focus and shoot guy and only occasionally shoot off a burst of three on a moving bird. I went on an outing shooting ospreys and one guy took 1200 shots mostly of birds sitting on a nest!! When I get home each day I want to go through maybe 50 to 75 shots, not 1200 of the same thing! lol!

Yep, always format mine...first thing I do when I get home from a shoot is burn a master disc with all my shots on it and one set on my PC to "play" with and then format and reset my pic count all ready for the next shoot... :-D

I still do that. I need to be more selective and limit my burst shooting to when there is a lot of movement, like BIF.

I haven't done much BIF shooting.
Mostly I'm a single frame setting on my camera.
But on occasion I'll do a multi frame setting. I've caught some very interesting series of action on the soccer fields with the Grand kids. And it will let me cherry pick a frame I like betterer.
Most times one or two frames to have a choice, because I do have issues with my folkus.

Yes, I have issue with focus also. My 80 -400 lens is not the fastest and I miss a lot of shots. Maybe I'll eventually get a prime, but the thing I like about zooms is you can usually get all the bird in the frame. I hate cutting off those lovely wings!! loL!! No grand kids yet, so if I miss a shot of a bird, no one complains! ;o)

I always look at the guy in the mirror first. But I'm really wondering why 2,3,5,9,10,13... are sharp. But the others are a green cloud out the computers fan. ;)
Personally, I like the ability to zoom in or out to try and fill my frame. So in my case, I guess ignorance is bliss. ;-)
(First thing I do is delete anything out of focus. Get rid of that evidence!)

Me too I always look at the shots on site and delete the OOF ones. I do some concerts and events for a non-profit here and then I have so many I need to wait till I see them on the laptop. The joy of being retired and having a good DSLR!!

Constant formatting is a total waste of time. It makes as much sense as formatting your hard drive every time you delete a batch of files.

Basically I think you are right. Depends upon how many pictures you take and the gb on the card. Only had one failed card in 50,000 images! And not even sure what the problem was. After all this discussion I did format both the SD and CF cards on my D800! Let's see how long that lasts! lol!

This is the website of the SD Association. All the major card manufacturers are members. Companies like Sandisk.
http://www.sdcard.org/home/
Anything you need to know about SD cards can be found on the site. When you finish rolling your eyes scan through the site and let me know if you find ANYTHING that states that constant formatting is necessary. You might also note that they highly recommend formatting new cards with their free app, SDFormatter, ON YOUR COMPUTER! Gasp! No! Not on a computer! Your camera will explode!! Everybody knows that!

Nikon recommends an SD card be formatted in the camera before use. It's sets the card up for the camera it is in.
But hey, what the hell does Nikon know?
Ref: Page 22 of my manual.

Hows those hemorrhoids doing today?

The reason that you should format the memroy card in the camera after each time you download all the images is that makes that card last longer and keeps all the images new images from merging and corupting the card. Just deleting images does not clean the memory card of previous images information, it only allows the device to overwrite that previous information. After a while of overwriting all that information become tangled with the new information resulting in memory card faillure.

thanks for the explanation was a question i was thinking about.

Of course they recommend that you format in camera. Why not? It doesn't hurt the card, although most format programs overwrite the card's protected area which contains security features. SDFormater is designed not to, but it probably doesn't matter in a camera. I would expect your manual to tell you to format a new card. Does it also tell you to format constantly? What does Nikon know about SD cards? Probably quite a bit but most likely not as much as the card manufacturers. The manufacturers take formating serious enough to design and offer free a format utility. They know that huge numbers of their cards are used in cameras. If they felt that constant formating was desirable they would mention it, along with the mass of info they have made available, I would think. But, what do they know. They just design and build them.
My hemmoroids? I normally ignore such things, but in checking it seems that you are just fine.

Yep, after I passed you.
You are a walking contradiction.

You sit there and bounce, and I'll continue to maintain my computers, hard drives, removable drives, and storage devices.
I have never lost any storage devices due to formatting.
And I've been playing with computers and the Internet since before Al Gore invented it. ;)

I've been playing with computers for quite some time also, and digital cameras since 2001. I've only had one card failure, and that was the first card I ever bought. A Sandisk 8Mb CF. It was failed before I ever unwrapped it. While on vacation, unfortunately. Sandisk replaced it, but not the missed photos, naturally. I format new cards and any card I am getting rid of. That's it. Never had a problem. But, format away if that's what makes you happy. I've got better things to do.
