Hiring a 2nd shooter

What do you feel is a fair amount to pay a 2nd shooter for a wedding. Considering the shooter is a professional photographer with their own equipment, experienced with weddings and owns their own business. Hired a a case by case situation ~~ Your opinions and experience greatly appreciated. I want to be fair but not too generous.

So much depends on local rates, but if I were asked, I would want $150/hr with a 4 hour minimum and the rights to display my images for my portfolio and enter in competition, but of course no rights to sell them.
My thought would be if you cannot afford that, you are not charging enough. :-)

Looking at your portfolio, that would be a bargain. You do great work.

I was offered $300 and the right to use the images in my portfiloio, I past on the offer for a number of reasons.
#1 - $300 was not enough money for 6+ hours of work.
#2 - the quality of the portfolio of the main shooter was not someone I wanted to be associated with or have people think I am less of a photographer than her. When I can look at her body of work and say "ya, I'm miles ahead of her" that is someone I don't need to learn from.
#3 - the location of the wedding was an hour and half from home $300 for being the second shooter included travel.
There were other reasons, but those are the ones that POP in my head.

As has been stated it depends on the area, but around here it seems to be $250-300 for the day. Remember that a second shooter is not generally someone who could competently handle a wedding on their own. They do not have the same responsibility as the main shooter and can often head off home a little earlier than the main shooter.
There are other photographers asking for a second shooter on Craigslist only offering $10 an hour.

around here in NYC, i ask 500.00 for 6 hrs of work, not including an asst. @ 20.00 per hr. i dont use any of the images, they belong to the studio. good luck.
