Deer in my yard

I think I posted these in the wrong place - I put them where I introduced myself. Anyway these pictures were taken with a Nikon D40 with a Nikon 55-300mm lense and a SB-700 flash. I just use the auto settings for now, but perhaps I could get some suggestions on how to use the manual settings for better pictures next time. It was almost dark when I took these. Thanks so much.

For the lighting you had, they look pretty good to me. Only thing I see is you need to straighten them and you cut the feet off in one.
Nice start though, keep them coming!
One more thing. If you use auto that is fine to start. If they look good to you. If you take a few that look good go in the camera and see what settings it picked. Just keep doing that with different shots and it will help you understand what settings do.

Yes, I think I was so focused on the face (and getting the pictures before the deer ran away) that I wasn't thinking about the feet. I'll keep working on it. Thanks for the comments.

By the way, in the first two shots, the deer is standing on a hill and I'm at the bottom; could be why they look a little bit off, but I'm not sure.

There are nine deer than come thru my yard almost every day. It has been interesting to see how the color of their coat changes with the seasons. Right now they are keeping an eye on my dog standing next to me. Nikon D700, 70-200 f/2.8 zoom.

You might try upping the ISO and not using the flash. You might be satisfied up to at least ISO 2000; maybe 3200.

I have taken some Elk pics in what looked like complete darkness. The moon was out but I could barely see the critters. It was ISO 3200 and a long exposure, thus some blurring due to creature movement, but just an idea what today's machines can do.
