I'm no portrait photographer, in fact I don't have a clue what I'm on about... but perhaps a reflector to throw some light up into that dark shadow under his chin/neck, it would also relieve the shadows in his eye sockets.

That key light needs to be placed more to the front so the catch light in the eye is present. Good ratio between the key and cross lights but it may help to also use a hair or rim light. Good expression. I'll bet he is impressed.

He wants to use it for his Facebook avatar. If the little fart would be nice and not make faces, I could get my reflector out. Good idea.

Sandra,

As an only child I have many memories of the friends I grew up with and envying them their many siblings...but also remenbering that frequently observed inter-sibling expression that often allowed me to return happily home for dinner with only my parents.

However, seeing those friends and their siblings later in life pantomiming those rivalries of childhood they had long outgrown (as you so well and lovingly captured in your brother's expression) how much I missed for having had no siblings.

Wonderful image, undereye shadows notwithstanding.

Dave

Yes... well you see he has just had a birthday, and he's only one year younger than me. He used to laud it over me during this period that he was only one year younger ... however ... in March I have my birthday. :-) I am then two years older than him. I used to tell him that he had to listen to me because I was TWO years older! LOL

ahhh ... but now the view of that has completely changed ... you see i am the old lady and he's the young buck.

Yeah....well...
You can rightly look at it this way, the two of you put the lie to the adage that men age better than women!

I'd say this expression is un-guarded and un-posed. You might find that impossible to reproduce during a more formal shoot, and you might find that a formal shoot doesn't produce anything as good. The point being that you may want to make the most of this one.

And the point of that point is that it raises the question "Did you deliberately want it that dark?" If a re-shoot isn't going to give you something better, I'd say that there's a lot of potential in the shot that editing could bring out.

Trying to get rid of it might be too much of a stretch, but you might be able to lift it somewhat before noise starts to intrude.

Very nice shot, I thought it was under exposed about 1 1/2 stops. The back eye is sharp, but the near eye is a soft. A little more depth of field would help. I agree a reflector to add a little fill would also help. Sometimes you just can't get people to cooperate and hold still for a second. Then we just do the best we can. Nice job.

Thank you Wayne. I downloaded the edit. I really appreciate it, but edits aren't allowed to be posted in the Photo Critique Section, so I'll have to delete it. :-( I do have it though .. thanks so much

You, kind sire, are FAR too modest.
