A little off topic but does anyone have a recommendation for a good digital picture frame? I thought this would be an easy gift but too many options. I want something simple to set up, 4:3 ratio, good resolution and maybe wifi. Thanks in advance.

Wi-fi implies a hard drive or permanent storage in the frame itself.
The one I have, has both a USB connection and an SD port.
Photos don't have to have the same resolution as for printing, so you can store more on an 8 gb thumbdrive or 8- or 16 gb SD card. One card with photos of the grandkids from birth to now, the photoframe makes a great babysitter :)
There is no brandname on mine, at least not that I can find, my daughter-in-law got it for me, I don't even know from what store.

Thank you. I'm overwhelmed by the variety and prices.

Not sure about the current state of this technology, but at one time, these frames were rated as the highest security risk of any computer peripheral. Most were made in China and contained "bugs" of various types that downloaded not just pictures but other data from computers and then when plugged in to the same or other computers would download virus or other malware. Some companies banned them from the workplace because of the high level of risk. As I said, security may have tightened up, but something to consider.

Good to know! Thanks. I think I do not really need wifi. I'm fine with downloading from my computer on a flash drive or sd card. Appreciate the feedback.

WiFi isn't (or wasn't) the danger. It's downloading files to a flash/USB drive, plugging the drive into the frame to download the images and then putting the drive back into the computer. The frame's internal software is (or was) riddled with malware hooks that, once downloaded back onto the computer, permitted others to tap into all the data on the computer.

Maybe Mr PC or one of the other geeks (I say that with respect :-D ) here on the Hog can provide more details.

The frame I've had for about 8 years is a Kodak. It's on every day for about 10 hours; never had a single problem. I don't know if Kodak still sells digital frames, but if they do I'd get one.

Just checked, and Kodak does sell frames. This is a model similar to mine:

I think I would avoid the wifi based frames for security reasons. B&H has a lot of frames with either on board memory ( I have seen as much as 4GB) or that take various memory cards.

I like the idea of a card. I could just pop the card out of my camera and look at the days shoot.

when you say Photo frame ssohl, do you mean a frame that sets on a end table or something larger. I use a high definition 32 inch Samsung TV. It has a USB port and the picture is much better than any of the frames I saw, so far. When we have relatives over sometimes I set up a slide show for them. This seems to work out great for us. Good luck with your decisions.

I do the same thing with a 55" Samsung and a 50" LG. Awesome.

I also have had a photo frame for a long time that we don't use. It was one of the early models and small, and was not very good. I would hope the newer ones are better, a lot better, because they are competing with HD TV's. WiFi would be nice only because you wouldn't need to copy files from your hard drive to the sd card or USB drive. That really is not a big deal unless you constantly are modifying your masterpieces.

My family gave one to our 80 year old mother-in-law. Even though it was 8 x 10 it still was rather small for her to view across a room. I had an old 24" iMac in the garage. I installed it on a table in the front room and downloaded all of our family pictures to IPhoto. Set the settings to slideshow, continuous loop and disabled sleep mode/screen saver. It works beautifully and all of her friends are in awe every time they visit. Good luck and Merry Christmas.

This was so timely for me. My ex has taken some fantastic photos over the years with an old Canon P&S that I gave her (6mpl--I think) I printed one out at 11x14 and it was great. But I want to give her one of these for Christmas. I just didn't want a tiny 7 inch or 8 inch unit. I want one that she can hang on the wall and cycle through her images. The BH reference has some bigger ones at reasonable price. Thanks.

Thanks all for your input. I want something to sit on an end table and found this: Pix-Star PXT510WR02 10.4 Inch FotoConnect XD Digital Picture Frame. I think this is what I'm going with. I wanted something bigger than the 8". At first I didn't thing I wanted wifi but talked to some people that have it and they love it. I'll let you know what I finally go with. Thanks again. I considered all your advice. Sue

I wound uo getting the Pixstar with wifi. So easy to send entire albums from my computer. It has a remote...easy to erase a not- so- good shot or change albums etc.
