Dog rescue pictures

I am director of a small breed dog rescue. We use 3 different websites to display pictures and bios of the dogs available. When I've had a dog online for a few weeks with little or no interest, I find that if I put different pictures up, it can make a difference. This tells me that many of my pictures are not so great. I'm hoping to learn some things about taking dog pictures in this forum. Having a really nice SLR camera donated to us made a huge difference in the pictures but my skills are lacking. I'm certainly not a photographer so probably won't have much to add.

Welcome,
Your post shows that there are lots of real world practical reasons folks use photography besides family memories, art, or to sell something. I'm sure you'll find some tips here..... good luck. Rocco

Gee, I have about 20 dogs online now. www.rccr.petfinder.com you'll notice one really great shot of a dog named Onyx. It's great because I didn't take it. A volunteer from another rescue did. You'll know which one it is right away. Clearly, it is eons better than all of the other pictures. Seeing the dog pictures that this woman took compared to any that I take is what sent me screaming to this forum! Guess which one I took?

Kim,
Just a couple fo things right off the top... you sound like this is something you will be doing for awhile. Go to Barnes and Noble or any big bookstore and look in the Photography section for a basic book on Pet Photography (Amazon would work too)
From the 2 you posted, I'll guess yours is the 2nd. To get folks "hooked" enough to come hold the prospective adoptee...get in close. For longer snouted dogs, focus right where the snout meets the face. For short snouted dogs, focus on the eyes. (I'm assuming you have a medium focal length lens if it was donated)
As a "charitable" group, you also may be able to get a local portrait photographer to come to your center and with your equipment give you a lesson or two on basic composition and posing of animals.
Post some more for us and good luck...you're doing good work.
Rocco

P.S. you also might want to put some attention grabbers in your shots. A few cents worth of fabric from the local craft shop can make a nifty Halloween (substitute appropriate holiday here...) bandana for seasonal shots
