Is this Tamron lens ok for novice Nikon photographer?

I have a Nikon D7100 and use it for travel and grandchildren. For a combo lens is this Tamron for $450.00 a good deal? I'm sure there have been other comments about this, but I wasn't looking at the time.

I have this lens and use it on my D90 occasionally, but my wife uses it all the time on D50. I would check the price on some place like B & H though. Tamron often times has a nice rebate.

Texas - I formerly owned that Tamron lens. I got considerable use out of it and very sharp images. Shop around to find the best price.

I'd also consider the Sigma 18-250 for $349 new, I've had one as a walking around lens for about a year on my D5200. It has a lock to prevent lens creep, the knock on that Tamron that I've read here is it does have some creep. Also, the new Sigma 18-300 for $579 or the Tamron 16-300 for about $600 if your budget can stretch a little are both very good.

Texas.....I own the 18-170 Tamron, and it is an excellent walk around lens. Mine is for Canon, but I really enjoy the lens. It also has the click stop to prevent the lens from creeping when the camera is pointed downward. I bought mine used "like new" on Amazon for under $300, and it was absolutely "just like new". Look around and good luck!!!

JUST got one from ebay for 329.99 Canadian retailer, arrived in bout a week best deal i could find very happy with lens only real problem is noticeable lens creep when angled down. see link below

I rarely take this lens off my Canon. Great lens. Yes, had some lens creep but sent it in to Tamron which tightened the barrel and fixed the problem. Buy the lens. You'll love it.

I don't have any lens creep problem because the lens has a lens lock I engage to prevent it.

ok.........kinda new here and to photography in general so maybe u know something I don't? JUST got this lens and the lock position only works with zoom closed? Right? when zoomed out you cant lock lens.......Right?

That is correct. When the zoom is closed, the lock can be engaged. Otherwise, it can't.
